Square Enix recently asked fans to vote for their favorite character from the classic game Chrono Trigger, and the results are in! Players have chosen the character they consider most memorable from the beloved 16-bit RPG.
Chrono Trigger is a highly acclaimed SNES role-playing game, frequently considered one of the best ever made. Its story takes place across different time periods and locations, following a group of unlikely heroes who must prevent the planet’s destruction. They learn that an alien entity named Lavos plans to wipe out life in 1999, and so they journey through time seeking a way to avert this disaster.
In 2025, Square Enix will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger. As part of the celebration, they asked fans to vote for their favorite character – hero or villain. According to Famitsu, the winner was Frog, the knight who was transformed into a frog-like being.
Frog Is Chrono Trigger’s Most Memorable Character

Okay, so Chrono Trigger has a ton of great characters, but Frog is seriously one of my favorites. His backstory is just awesome – it’s all about getting revenge for his friend and proving he’s worthy to wield the Masamune. Honestly, the whole thing is super compelling, and his theme song? Forget about it – it’s epic and really adds to his story.
Here’s a list of the ten most popular characters from Chrono Trigger, according to a fan vote in Japan:

- 9th – Schala
- 8th – Nu
- 7th – Marle
- 6th – Ayla
- 5th – Lucca
- 4th – Magus
- 3rd – Robo
- 2nd – Crono
- 1st – Frog
It’s no surprise that the seven highest-ranked characters were all from the same group. However, it was unexpected to see the female characters ranked so low. Apparently, they weren’t as well-liked as the villainous wizard, the robot, the silent character, or even the large frog wielding a sword.
