For over forty years, Dragon Ball has remained incredibly popular. With the original manga, anime series, and many different adaptations and spin-offs, there’s plenty of Dragon Ball content available. Over its nearly fifty-year history, the series has introduced fans to a huge number of characters.
Throughout the series, characters have experienced both triumphs and setbacks, with some becoming incredibly powerful while others have faded into the background. The future of the series is unclear, but the latest events have resulted in a surprising shift in power dynamics. Here’s a look at the strongest characters in Dragon Ball, based on the current storyline.
Piccolo
New Form, New Piccolo
For a long time, Piccolo wasn’t the main focus of the story. While he initially fought on equal footing with Goku, he eventually took a backseat as characters like Goku and Vegeta became the central heroes.
While Piccolo isn’t quite as strong as Goku or Vegeta yet, he’s significantly more powerful than he was at the start of Super. His new Orange Piccolo form means he’ll likely play a bigger role in the story if it continues.
Broly
Broly Instantly Became one of Dragon Ball’s Strongest
Among villains created solely for the movies and not part of the main Dragon Ball story, Broly was easily the most beloved by fans. After years of requests, he finally became an official part of the series with his appearance in Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
Broly possesses incredible natural power and has quickly proven his ability to learn and match the strength of Goku and Vegeta, even as they transformed during their first fight. As he gains better control over his Legendary Super Saiyan form, he’s becoming a likely candidate for one of the strongest characters in the series.
Vegeta
Everyone’s Favorite Anti-Hero Finally Caught Up
As a long-time Dragon Ball fan, I’m seriously excited because it looks like Vegeta and Goku are finally becoming equals again! Goku’s really diving into training with Whis, trying to learn everything he can about Angel techniques, and Vegeta? He’s thriving under Beerus’ guidance! The God of Destruction is actually teaching him some incredible new abilities, and it’s amazing to watch. It feels like we’re about to see a whole new level of power from both of them!
While Goku has Ultra Instinct, Vegeta has achieved Ultra Ego, a powerful form that matches his intense fighting style. Knowing Vegeta, he’ll continue to improve, so it will be exciting to see what he can do once he’s completely mastered this new ability.
Goku
Goku’s Still Doing Incredible Things
It might be surprising to see Goku isn’t ranked higher. While he’s famous for overcoming incredible challenges and exceeding expectations, Dragon Ball Super has shown us there are beings even he can’t defeat – at least, not right now.
Goku is making excellent progress with his training under Whis. True to form, he’s not only gotten better at using Ultra Instinct, but he’s developed his own version called True Ultra Instinct. The end of the Super Hero Saga suggests he’s even mastered Perfected Ultra Instinct, making him incredibly powerful – almost unbeatable by other mortals. However, a couple of opponents still have a good chance against him.
Gohan
Is Gohan Back For Good?
Gohan’s strength has fluctuated quite a bit in the Dragon Ball series. He’s always had the potential to be incredibly powerful, and with his new Beast form, he’s likely to stay one of the strongest fighters for a long time.
During a practice match, Gohan seemed to be holding his own against Goku, even with Goku using his most powerful Perfected Ultra Instinct form. It’s important to remember that Gohan doesn’t train consistently, while Goku is always dedicated. Although Goku’s consistent training gave him an edge in this particular fight, Gohan likely has the potential to become even stronger than his father.
Frieza
A Surprise Reveal Set Frieza Up As The Strongest Mortal Right Now
Reviving Frieza was a risky move, but the series has definitely been entertaining since he came back. He briefly became one of Dragon Ball’s most powerful villains again, though Goku and Vegeta ultimately defeated him.
The recent reveal of Frieza’s new transformation in the Granolah the Survivor Saga suggests he’s become the strongest being in the universe once more. The moment was particularly striking, as he effortlessly defeated Awakened Gas, and then one-shotted both Goku and Vegeta in their most powerful forms. It’s clear Frieza will be the biggest threat when the story continues.
Beerus
The God of Destruction is No Pushover
Beerus is one of the strongest characters in Universe 7, known as its God of Destruction. His power was clearly demonstrated in the Battle of Gods movie, where even Goku, after achieving the Super Saiyan God transformation, had trouble fighting him.
Goku and Vegeta have gotten much stronger with the help of Whis and Beerus. However, they – and other strong fighters like Broly, Gohan, and Frieza – are still far below Beerus’s immense power level.
The Angels & Grand Zeno
Some People Are Just Can’t Be Surpassed
Grand Zeno and the Angels are more powerful than even the strongest Destroyers. Angels have almost limitless power, far exceeding that of a God of Destruction. Grand Zeno, while not physically strong, is the most powerful being in the universe because he can erase anything from existence.
It’s unlikely we’ll see Goku and his friends become this powerful, and that might actually be a positive. While incredibly strong characters are fun in Dragon Ball, keeping Goku and the core group a bit more relatable helps maintain an engaging story.
