Animoca’s Big plans for stablecoins and AI: What could possibly go wrong?

In a move that’s about as surprising as noticing the sun rises in the morning, Animoca Brands, the web3 gaming behemoth that’s somehow managed to invest in around 600 companies since the dawn of time-or at least since 2014-has announced it’s casting its net wider. No longer content simply to splash around in the bubbly world of gaming, the company’s chief strategy officer, the ever-enthusiastic Keyvan Peymani, revealed during a CNBC chat that the company’s sights are set on an eclectic mix of digital delights like stablecoins, AI, and DePIN. Because, of course, who doesn’t want their currency backed by a robot? 🤖💸

And it gets better. “We invest in dozens of companies a year,” Peymani droned on with the enthusiasm of someone describing their new sandcastle obsession. “Whether it’s AI or DePIN or DeFi or gaming, our goal is to keep an eye on the expanding universe we’re part of.” It’s like a cosmic tour through the universe of tech, and Animoca is riding shotgun with a giant bag of money.

Gaming, of course, remains the crown jewel among the 628 companies in their burgeoning empire, with 230 involved in gaming alone. Since their humble beginnings, the company has funded every blockchain fad from CryptoKitties to Axie Infinity (the Tamagotchi for the blockchain age), and has only recently decided that deploying money into infrastructure, AI, and decentralized finance is a good idea-probably because those sectors are the future, or at least that’s what the press releases tell us.

“Whenever something that looks shiny and exciting appears-stablecoins, real-world assets (RWAs), or DeFi-our plan is to jump right in and become one of the market leaders,” Peymani confidently asserted, as if this is just common sense, not the desperate scramble of a company trying to stay cool in a rapidly changing world.

Animoca dreams of “game-changing” projects (and possibly world domination)

Founder Yat Siu, who’s probably busy drafting speeches about the “next big thing,” told CryptoMoon that institutional participation (in other words, billionaires and their banks) will be pivotal for crypto’s next act. But don’t expect them all to just buy Bitcoin and call it a day-no, Siu insists they’ll actually want utility, because who needs a digital gold rush when you can have a digital utility? Perhaps that’s the secret to convincing the big players to play along.

Meanwhile, on the legislative front, U.S. lawmakers are busy drafting a crypto market structure bill, which is about as exciting as watching paint dry but with slightly more legal jargon. It’ll decide who gets to boss the crypto space around come December, so stay tuned – or don’t, if you prefer to pretend none of this is happening.

Gaming still rocks, even with shiny new toys

Despite all these new ventures into AI and finance, Peymani assures us that gaming remains a priority-probably because it’s easier to sell virtual swords and dragons than stablecoins, though that may be changing. “We’re still excited about how gaming can truly let players turn their efforts into real assets beyond the screen,” he said, sounding someone optimistic in a bubble that’s about to burst (but maybe not any time soon).

And in a fun bit of trivia, the third quarter of 2025 saw a staggering 290% jump in crypto venture funding-because nothing says confidence like a massive spike in investment just when you thought it couldn’t get crazier. Established players, built since 2018, snagged most of the cash, while fresh-faced startups from 2024 were busy closing deals like there’s no tomorrow.

Oh, and by the way, Animoca is planning to go public via a reverse merger with an AI-focused fintech called Currenc Group on Nasdaq next year-because why not add one more name to the list of things most people can’t pronounce? 🚀
