Okay, so huge news for Pokemon Legends: Z-A! They’re adding Mega Sceptile on January 7th, which is awesome. But here’s the thing – unlocking it is linked to the new season of Ranked Battles. That means if you don’t have the DLC, getting Mega Sceptile right away might be tough, but it’s definitely still possible, just a bit more of a grind!
As a huge Pokémon fan, I was so excited for Pokémon Legends: Z-A! It launched with a ton of Mega Evolutions – over 70, with a bunch of new ones. But honestly, it was a little disappointing that not all my favorites were available right away. The good news is, Game Freak has been adding them after launch, and they’ve promised even more! I was especially hoping to see the Mega Evolution for my Gen 3 starter, and they said the Mega Stone would be available in a future Ranked Battle season. Well, that season finally has a date, which is awesome!
Sceptilite Coming to Pokemon Legends: Z-A in Ranked Battles Season 5
Ranked Battles Season 5 starts next Wednesday, January 7th, at 10pm Pacific Time / 1pm Eastern Time. The season will last about three weeks, ending on January 28th at 5:59pm Pacific Time / 8:59pm Eastern Time. During this time, players will be able to earn Sceptilite, which allows Sceptile to Mega Evolve, for the first time in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Reaching rank S to get the item should be fairly easy, but Mega Sceptile won’t be available to everyone right away.

How To Obtain Sceptile In Pokemon Legends: Z-A
Sceptile became available in Pokemon Legends: Z-A with the Mega Dimension DLC, released on December 10th. You need to purchase the $29.99 DLC to encounter Sceptile in the game. Even after buying it, you’ll need to advance through the Hyperspace Missions. The quest to unlock Sceptile begins at the top of Hotel Z, and the game will prompt you to visit it after updating to version 2.0.0 or later.
Similar to other Pokemon games, Legends: Z-A lets players trade for creatures that were originally part of downloadable content, even if they haven’t purchased that content themselves. This means that getting a Mega Sceptile might be possible even on a limited budget, but it will take some effort and luck to find someone willing to trade one. Online trading communities can be a big help in this search. For example, the r/PokemonTrades subreddit gets around 10,000 visitors each week, and the main Pokemon subreddit has over 224,000 members and has regularly hosted dedicated trading threads since October.
There’s another thing to keep in mind with Sceptile: getting its Mega Stone, Sceptilite, will only be possible during the next Ranked Battles season. This means you’ll need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to obtain it. While the subscription starts at $3.99 a month, the costs can quickly add up. If you don’t want to trade for Mega Sceptile, getting it will require both a Nintendo Switch Online subscription and the DLC for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, costing between $93.97 and $103.97 depending on whether you buy the version for the original Switch or the new Switch 2 console.
Based on past seasons, it shouldn’t take long – just a few minutes of online play – to reach Rank S and earn the Sceptilite in Season 5 of Ranked Battles. This season will also bring back other Mega Stones as rewards for ranking up, including Greninjite, Delphoxite, Chesnaughtite, and Baxcalibrite. This is typical for Pokémon games, and Sceptilite is also likely to become available in the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Keep in mind that you’ll still need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to participate in Ranked Battles and earn it.
