Amazon’s God of War Series Just Announced Who’s Playing Kratos

Amazon MGM and Sony Pictures have found their Kratos for the upcoming God of War TV series on Prime Video. Ryan Hurst, known for Sons of Anarchy, will play the iconic Ghost of Sparta. Interestingly, Hurst is already familiar with the God of War universe, having voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarok.

The upcoming God of War TV series is being made by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. After it was first announced in 2022, the show faced some setbacks, including the departure of several key team members. Development restarted in 2024 with Ronald D. Moore brought on as showrunner. Moore is collaborating with Sony’s Santa Monica Studio and Cory Barlog, the creative director of the God of War game series, on writing the scripts. Barlog and PlayStation executive Hermen Hulst are both executive producers on the show. Currently, filming is planned to begin in Vancouver in March 2026.

God of War TV Series Reveals Who Plays The Ghost of Sparta

Just two months before filming begins on the God of War show, Amazon MGM and Sony Pictures have announced Ryan Hurst as the actor who will play Kratos. Hurst is known for his roles in popular projects like the crime drama Sons of Anarchy, where he played Harry “Opie” Winston, and the Disney film Remember the Titans, where he portrayed Gerry Bertier.

Fans of God of War might recognize the name Hurst. He previously provided the voice for Thor, the powerful Norse god, in God of War Ragnarok. His performance as Thor was well-received and earned him a BAFTA nomination for best supporting performer in 2023. While he didn’t win, the BAFTA ultimately went to Laya DeLeon Hayes, another voice actor from God of War Ragnarok who played Angrboda. Hurst is now joining Terrence C. Carson and Christopher Judge as one of the actors portraying Kratos.

The highly anticipated God of War TV series will be based on the popular Norse mythology storyline from the 2018 God of War game. Kratos and his son, Atreus, will both appear in the show, and other key figures like Baldur and Freya are expected to play significant roles. A central theme of the series will be the evolving relationship between Kratos and Atreus as they learn and grow together, facing challenges that will test their bond. While Alexander Ludwig has been cast as Kratos, several important characters from the Norse saga – including Atreus, Freya, and Odin – haven’t yet been officially cast by Amazon or Sony.

Other God of War Roles May Be Confirmed Soon

Now that the main actor for the God of War TV series has been announced, casting for other characters is still underway. Previous reports suggest Max Parker, known for his roles in Boots and Doctor Who, might play Baldur, the villain from the 2018 God of War game. There’s also been speculation that Olafur Darri Olafsson, who starred in Severance, could portray Thor. However, until Amazon or Sony makes an official announcement, these casting choices remain unconfirmed and should be viewed as rumors.

I’m so excited that the God of War show on Prime Video is finally starting production! It’s been a while since we heard anything about the games themselves, though – the last big update was the Valhalla DLC for God of War Ragnarok back in 2023. Everyone’s been speculating about where the story could go next after Ragnarok, and I’m really eager to find out when Kratos will be back on PlayStation. I’m hoping we don’t have to wait too long!
