Horror fans have a lot to look forward to in 2026, and the year is kicking off with the new Silent Hill movie, Return to Silent Hill. A recent exclusive trailer shown to Game Rant revealed a key moment – James Sunderland receiving his signature radio – giving fans a taste of what to expect. Return to Silent Hill arrives in US theaters on January 23rd, and both new and longtime fans are eager to revisit the unsettling and psychological world of the beloved Silent Hill series.
The Silent Hill video game series began in 1999 on the PlayStation and quickly became a highly popular horror franchise, alongside classics like Resident Evil and Fatal Frame. However, adapting Silent Hill for the big screen has been challenging. While the 2006 film received decent reviews, the 2012 sequel, Silent Hill: Revelation, was criticized for its heavy use of special effects and a confusing plot that contradicted details from the game Silent Hill 3. The upcoming film, Return to Silent Hill, aims to recapture the magic of the series by including key elements from the games, and it hopes to be a more faithful adaptation than previous attempts.
Newest Return to Silent Hill Trailer Shows James Sunderland’s Radio
The upcoming film Return to Silent Hill, directed by Christophe Gans, retells the story of Silent Hill 2, focusing on James Sunderland’s search for his wife, Mary, who he believes is dead. Trailers have offered glimpses of the redesigned Pyramid Head and other familiar monsters like the Bubble Head Nurses. A recent trailer shared with Game Rant showed James picking up his signature static-filled radio – a detail that fans of the game will instantly recognize. Gans previously included game puzzles in the 2006 Silent Hill movie, which combined elements from different games in the series, and this radio scene suggests the new film will also closely follow the source material.
Despite some criticism of Christophe Gans’ changes to the story and characters in the Silent Hill films, fans are thrilled that Akira Yamaoka, the original composer for the Silent Hill series, is handling the sound design for Return to Silent Hill. The sound design in Gans’ first film was highly praised for capturing the unsettling atmosphere of the games, and Yamaoka’s involvement is generating renewed excitement for this new adaptation.

The original 2006 film did well, the composer from that movie, Yamaoka, is involved, and the story is based on the highly-regarded Silent Hill 2. This combination could create a great experience and attract new players to the Silent Hill series. The previous films boosted the number of people playing the games, and this new movie could do the same, especially encouraging viewers to try the recent Silent Hill 2 remake or explore the franchise further.
