After the often-criticized ending of Game of Thrones, a sequel series is now in the works. Despite the show’s final seasons receiving backlash, Game of Thrones remains one of the most acclaimed TV series of all time. HBO recognizes the continued fan interest and has already begun expanding the universe with earlier-timeline prequel shows, and now a direct sequel.
With the success of House of the Dragon, a prequel to Game of Thrones focusing on the Targaryen civil war, another prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is on its way. While fans enjoy these glimpses into the past, many have been hoping for a story set after the events of the original Game of Thrones. Now, those fans are in luck – a sequel series has officially been announced.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a sequel to Game of Thrones is in the works. The new series will focus on Arya Stark, taking the place of a previously planned spin-off about Jon Snow that has been canceled. Quoc Dang Tran is writing the series, but no actors have been confirmed yet. While Maisie Williams, who played Arya, hasn’t officially signed on, the possibility of recasting the role exists, though it could disappoint viewers.
Spoilers for Game of Thrones
Given Arya Stark’s journey at the end of Game of Thrones, a sequel series centered on her makes a lot of sense. It allows HBO to create new stories without needing to bring back most of the original cast. As fans will recall, Arya sailed west of Westeros to explore unknown lands after fulfilling her goals in the main series. This opens up the possibility of discovering a new continent, introducing fresh characters, ideas, and history never before seen in the show.
The upcoming Arya Stark show could take a completely different direction. One possibility is that it follows Arya’s return to Westeros after her travels, but that would be challenging. Many of the actors who survived Game of Thrones are currently committed to other projects.
Even so, it’ll probably take years for a spin-off focused on Arya to really gain momentum. In the meantime, fans of Game of Thrones can anticipate the debut of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on January 18th and the third season of House of the Dragon this summer.
