Choosing a favorite character in Slay the Spire 2 is tough – it’s like picking a favorite child. You don’t want to play favorites, but let’s be honest, you probably have one. Go ahead, admit it!
With Slay the Spire 2, it’s easy to be flexible with character choice because all five are really well-designed and fun to play. I often let my friends pick first in multiplayer, knowing I’ll enjoy whichever character is left.
Life is always full of difficult choices, so let’s tackle a few more right now. I’m going to rank the five characters in Slay the Spire 2 from least to most powerful, but keep in mind that they’re all really great!
5. The Ironclad
Tanks for the Memories

| Learning Curve | Low |
|---|---|
| Strength | HP for Days |
| Weakness | Lack of Deeper Systems to Leverage |
If you jumped straight to the rankings, let me address the Ironclad players right away. I know seeing him at number five is disappointing, and I understand your frustration. But believe me, I truly appreciate how strong and effective Ironclad is – I’ve played him extensively in both games!
The Ironclad is an ideal starting character, and Mega Crit made a smart choice including him in both games. He’s the easiest to learn, and his ability to recover health with Burning Blood is a huge advantage early on, especially since he also begins with the most health of any character.
My main concern with this character is his lack of specialization – he doesn’t easily adapt to focus on any particular strategy during a playthrough, especially with different build options. He’s fundamentally a tank, which can be very effective in Slay the Spire 2, but it also means he might not have as much depth or potential for complex strategies compared to other characters.
4. The Regent
Cosmic Cannon
| Learning Curve | High |
|---|---|
| Strength | Huge Damage Output |
| Weakness | A Glass Cannon |
The Regent is the first new character revealed, and honestly, he’s my favorite so far. The design team really nailed his look and attitude. He’s an alien ruler who seems completely unbothered by everything, and that’s perfectly captured in his artwork and how he moves in the game – he even looks like he’s yawning! It’s a really funny addition to the game’s lineup.
The Regent is the hardest character to master in the game – many players admit they’re still figuring him out. However, if you put in the effort, you’ll soon discover he’s incredibly powerful, though a little delicate. He’s a ‘glass cannon’: he can deal a ton of damage, but you need to play carefully, or he’ll be defeated quickly.
He’s also harder to learn than other characters because of his unique star energy system. It’s complicated at first, but mastering it is worth it – The Regent can become incredibly powerful later in the game if you use his abilities effectively.
3. The Silent
But Deadly
| Learning Curve | Medium |
|---|---|
| Strength | Poison and Shiv Builds |
| Weakness | Can Get Stuck Between Build Options |
I spent hundreds of hours playing the original Slay the Spire, and The Silent was always my favorite character. I’m happy to say she’s essentially the same in this version, and that’s exactly what I wanted.
When playing as The Silent, most players focus on either collecting Poison or Shivs. Both are excellent choices and can lead to a lot of wins.
I often struggle deciding whether to focus on Poison or Shiv cards, because the game’s random card draws make it hard to commit to one strategy. It’s difficult to know which approach will be more effective later on, since you can’t predict what cards you’ll get. While a combination of both Poison and Shiv can work, it’s definitely more challenging to pull off.
2. The Necrobinder
Osty’s Ol’ Pro Sis
| Learning Curve | High |
|---|---|
| Strength | Doom |
| Weakness | Doom |
The sequel introduced a new character, The Necrobinder, who quickly became very popular with players. After just a couple of playthroughs with her and her unique companion, Osty – a massive, animated skeleton hand – it’s easy to understand why. Osty can both attack enemies and absorb damage, and The Necrobinder also introduces Doom, arguably the game’s most interesting new status effect.
Doom functions similarly to poison, but it’s more of a delayed effect. When you play cards that add ‘Doom,’ a purple bar appears on an enemy’s health. If you reduce their health below the amount of Doom stacked on them, they’ll be defeated at the start of their next turn. This mechanic is fantastic, and when paired with poison, The Necrobinder and The Silent make a powerful team in co-op multiplayer.

Okay, so I love playing The Necrobinder, but there’s a tricky thing about their ‘Doom’ ability. Unlike a damage-over-time effect like Poison, Doom doesn’t actually hurt enemies on its own. That means it’s super tempting to just keep stacking it and stacking it, but you can easily forget to focus on actually dealing damage! If you can find that sweet spot – using Doom effectively while still hitting hard – this character is amazing. But honestly, if you can’t balance those two things, you’re going to have a rough time. It’s all about finding that balance, or you’re… well, doomed!
1. The Defect
In Name Only
| Learning Curve | Medium |
|---|---|
| Strength | Can Play Any Style You Want |
| Weakness | Perhaps More RNG-Affected Than Others |
The Defect is currently considered the strongest character in Slay the Spire 2, returning from the first game. I know it can be tricky to build him effectively, and that’s understandable. But when you manage to get the right combination of cards and relics, he’s incredibly powerful and can easily win.
If you can expand beyond the initial three orb slots and consistently use the best combination of orbs, you’ll be incredibly powerful. When combined with Frost orbs that also boost his defenses, The Defect becomes a truly formidable character if you play your cards right.
While some might find The Defect a bit too reliant on luck to be a top pick, it’s important to remember how incredibly strong he can be when things fall into place.
