Spoilers for Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.5 and speculation for Evercold follow.
At the 2026 Fan Festival, Final Fantasy XIV announced a new storyline called the Godless Realms Saga. This saga begins with the ‘Evercold’ expansion in January 2027 and will unfold over several future expansions. Following the conclusion of the Zodiark and Hydaelyn story in ‘Endwalker’, Final Fantasy XIV is starting a major new narrative arc with ‘Evercold’ – one that moves away from the conflict between gods of light and darkness.
The Godless Realms Saga offers a fresh story inspired by the popular world of Final Fantasy 14, and it’s really starting to gain momentum with the Evercold expansion. Though the expansion isn’t out yet, players already have a good idea of the challenges ahead in Final Fantasy 14: Evercold and throughout this new storyline.
What is the Godless Realms Saga in Final Fantasy 14?
Navigating a World Without Zodiark or Hydaelyn
The core story of Final Fantasy 14 revolved around a conflict between Zodiark, a dark god summoned by the Ascians to prevent a cataclysm, and Hydaelyn, a powerful entity who shattered Zodiark and the world into fourteen pieces. This narrative continued through the Endwalker expansion, ultimately leading to the defeat of both gods and a final resolution of the events that caused their creation.

The Godless Realms Saga explores what happens after the gods are gone. In Final Fantasy 14, the Ascians have been largely defeated – their powerful leaders, the Paragons, are gone, and the remaining Overlords are weakened and fleeing. People on the world of Etheirys believed they were finally free to build their own futures…but that assumption may be wrong.
The storylines following the Endwalker expansion and leading into Dawntrail can also be seen as part of a larger story called the Godless Realms Saga, as they connect these two major Final Fantasy 14 arcs.
In the main story of Final Fantasy 14’s Patch 7.5, players discovered some startling information. Halmarut, an Ascian, explained that Etheirys naturally wants to merge back into one world without Hydaelyn’s guidance to keep its different parts separate. This process, unlike the Ascians’ efforts to revive Zodiark, wouldn’t care about preserving life. If this event, called the Solstice, happens, all life on the world and its reflections would end, and the world would essentially reset.
Halmarut is trying to prevent a catastrophic event called the Solstice by forming a group called the Winterers. This group includes people from different worlds, like Calyx, a leader from the game Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail. The Winterers plan to force events similar to ancient Rejoinings, but with the aim of saving the world instead of resurrecting a dangerous god. While this might seem like a good intention, their methods – based on Calyx’s past actions – will likely clash with the Warrior of Light and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. This means Etheirys’ heroes now face two urgent challenges: stopping the Winterers’ harsh plans and finding a way to prevent the Solstice from wiping out all life.
How Final Fantasy 14: Evercold Plays Into the Godless Realms Saga
And Where We Might Be Going Afterward
The next big update for Final Fantasy 14, called Evercold, is coming in early 2027. It will be the first major step in a new storyline called the Godless Realms Saga. While the Scions of the Seventh Dawn are wary of trusting Ascians, they recognize the danger posed by the Solstice. Towards the end of the Patch 7.5 story, Calyx revealed that he and Halmarut were traveling to the Fourth Reflection to investigate the Winterer.
The Fourth is the world featured in the Evercold teaser trailer and serves as the primary location for the expansion. Calyx describes it as a once-perfect place now gripped by a devastating frost. To survive, its people built incredible, magical kingdoms in the sky. This world is filled with shimmering crystal structures, beautiful buildings inspired by Norse design, and enormous, magical giants. The Fourth is a unique and captivating place, offering both exciting adventures and dangerous challenges.
We don’t yet know if the recent frost affecting the Fourth is related to the upcoming Solstice, but it seems probable. Similarly, the identity of the Winterer remains unknown. The Evercold trailer only shows four new characters: a one-eyed Auri man, a praying Auri girl, an elder storyteller, and a young Au Ra listener. While the child and storyteller likely aren’t involved, either one of the other two, or a character not yet revealed, could be working with Halmarut.
Even if the Winterers are defeated, it won’t matter if the Solstice occurs. Currently, the only solution seems to be magically reuniting the fractured reflections. This means the Scions will likely need to find a way to handle these reflections – perhaps by safely reuniting them without harming the people within. Calyx has revealed that each of the Winterers has their own reasons for aiding Halmarut, but unlike typical Final Fantasy villains, Halmarut herself is primarily focused on protecting humanity. If the Warrior of Light can restore the Godless Realms without causing a disaster, there’s a chance Halmarut might cooperate, even if the other Winterers still pose a threat.
Despite everything mentioned, the story of the Godless Realms Saga is truly starting with Evercold. Besides the Source and the Fourth, there are five more pieces of Etheirys that weren’t put back together during the events of Final Fantasy 14.
- The First
- Nearly succumbed to the Flood of Light
- Setting of the Shadowbringers expansion
- The Thirteenth
- Unsuccessfully Rejoined in a Flood of Darkness and became the Void
- Origin of all Voidsent in FF14, prominent in the post-Endwalker patch stories
- The Ninth
- Nearly destroyed by the Storm Surge
- Home of Alexandria, Treno, and Living Memory from Dawntrail
- The Eighth and the Eleventh
- Mysterious shards with no information available about them
Thanks to a special key called Ethos – linked to a powerful crystal – the hero of Final Fantasy 14 can now travel between worlds. As they learn to control this ability and try to stop a catastrophic event called the Solstice, it’s likely they’ll visit other versions of their world, particularly the Eighth and Eleventh. The only way to prevent the Solstice from destroying everything appears to be to intentionally reunite these fragmented worlds, which means players can expect a journey filled with travel to different realities.

It’s difficult to predict how long the Godless Realms Saga will ultimately be, but the storyline involving Hydaelyn and Zodiark lasted throughout the original A Realm Reborn and its first four expansions – roughly ten years. Considering the game’s success, it’s safe to say that resolving the current story will likely take several more expansions, and possibly even longer. Fans can therefore expect plenty of surprises and developments in Final Fantasy 14 in the years to come.
