Valve Announces Steam Controller Reservations Ahead of Restock

Valve is making more Steam Controllers available, and you can now sign up to reserve one. The initial release was quickly bought up by resellers, but Valve reacted quickly to the unexpectedly high demand. They’ll soon open registration for the next batch of controllers, and new measures are in place to try and ensure a fairer process for everyone.

When the gamepad was first announced, a lot of people doubted it – some thought it was too expensive or just too big. But honestly, those concerns didn’t seem to matter much because it sold out almost instantly! Seriously, within half an hour of going on sale, it was gone. Of course, that meant scalpers jumped in, trying to sell it for three times the price. Luckily, Valve listened to the fans who were upset and promised to fix things for future releases.

Reservations for New Steam Controller Orders Open May 8

Valve announced on May 7th that they’re starting a reservation system for the Steam Controller on May 8th at 10 AM Pacific Time (1 PM Eastern). This doesn’t mean new controllers will be available to buy right away. Instead, the system lets people sign up to reserve their place in line for when more controllers are back in stock. Those who reserve a spot will get an email with a link to purchase, in the order they signed up. Valve says the wait shouldn’t be too long. They previously mentioned restocking soon, and now confirm that orders from these reservations will start shipping the week of May 11th in the U.S. and Canada, with other regions following in the weeks after.

To prevent people from buying controllers just to resell them at a higher price, Valve is taking several steps beyond requiring a reservation. Each person can only order one controller, and you’ll have 72 hours to complete your purchase after receiving an email. Those who already own a Steam Controller aren’t eligible to order another one right now. Additionally, Valve won’t allow reservations from new accounts – those created after April 27, 2026, when the Steam Controller was first announced – or accounts that have violated Steam’s policies.

Good news for those who pre-ordered the Steam Controller – the first shipments are now going out! Customers in at least 22 countries are starting to see their orders move through the shipping process. Valve seems to be fulfilling orders quickly, which is a positive step given the initial concerns about availability. While some people are still waiting, the new queue system should help make the process fairer and more organized moving forward.

It’s still too early to know if this new reservation system will be effective, or how many Steam Controllers will be available in the next batch. If it works well, Valve might use a similar method when the Steam Machine comes out later this year. While Valve hasn’t confirmed this, it makes sense considering how quickly their hardware typically sells out.
