Pokemon Fan Finds Extremely Rare One-of-a-Kind Shiny Pokemon

A Pokémon fan recently discovered an incredibly rare, shiny Pokémon that might be completely unique – meaning no other player has found one like it. Shiny Pokémon have always been highly sought after by collectors due to their unusual color variations and rarity. While newer Pokémon games have sometimes been criticized for being too easy, including when it comes to finding shiny Pokémon, older games, like the remakes of the original Kanto region from Generation 3, remain incredibly challenging in that regard.

Finding shiny Pokémon in the older games Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen is extremely difficult. The base chance of encountering one is only 1 in 8,192, and there’s no way to increase those odds in these versions. Recently, a player remarkably found a shiny Ditto – a particularly prized and rare Pokémon, as Ditto is harder to find than most others. The same challenging odds apply to Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, and one lucky player even managed to find what’s considered the most valuable shiny Pokémon of all.

Say Hello to The Rarest Shiny Pokemon Ever

A Reddit user named eLd0rko recently posted a picture of themselves playing a Gen 3 Pokémon game on a retro handheld. In the picture, their Combusken is facing a rare, shiny Spinda. Shiny Spinda is especially unique because of its many possible spot patterns – over four billion, in fact! This means that any specific pattern is likely owned by very few, if any, players. Spinda was introduced in Generation 3 and is the only Pokémon with such a wide range of cosmetic variations, with roughly 4.3 billion possible pattern combinations.

Pokémon also have cosmetic differences based on gender. For example, male and female Pikachu have differently shaped tails, and female Alakazam have shorter whiskers than males. Some gender differences are more significant, like with Basculegion, where males and females look and perform differently in battle – male Basculegion is particularly strong with its high Attack stat in Pokémon Champions.

Spinda is already incredibly rare because each one has a unique pattern, and the chances of getting a specific pattern are about 1 in 4.3 billion. Finding a shiny Spinda in the older games (Generation 3) was even harder, with odds of roughly 1 in 35 trillion! This inspired a joke about needing to find over 4 billion shiny Spinda to ‘catch them all’. In reality, it’s practically impossible to collect even a fraction of them, as there are so many possible variations that you’d need thousands of premium accounts on Pokémon Home just to store them all.

Okay, so while everyone’s been amazed by the idea of Spinda having over four billion possible patterns, there are a few things to keep in mind. Another Redditor, HildartheDorf, pointed out that a lot of those patterns actually end up looking the same – some spots overlap, or the differences are hidden because they’re on the edges of the sprite. It’s always been tricky for the games to deal with Spinda, honestly. We even saw it with Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl – they finally added Spinda to the Switch, but because of a coding issue with its patterns, you couldn’t transfer it to Pokemon Home, which was super frustrating!

Now that it’s been confirmed through data discovered in game files that Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald are coming to the Switch and potentially the Switch 2, players will finally have the opportunity to catch shiny Spinda, and maybe even be the first to find one with a rare pattern. The complexity of Spinda’s patterns likely explains why it wasn’t included in the most recent Pokémon games from Generations 8 and 9.
