Following the popularity of the original Temtem, its developer, Crema, has begun a new project called Temtem: Pioneers. This ambitious follow-up aims to reinvent the monster-collecting experience and has quickly gained significant support on Kickstarter, exceeding its initial $100,000 goal and approaching $500,000. While Temtem remains a highly-regarded Pokémonlike game, the development team has finished releasing all planned major updates. The original game is still playable online, but it will no longer receive active development. Temtem: Pioneers* represents a fresh start and a new direction for the franchise.
The Kickstarter campaign for Temtem: Pioneers ends in less than 48 hours. You can get the game for about $30 by choosing a reward tier that doesn’t include extra Kickstarter perks or access to the upcoming alpha version. Keep in mind the full game isn’t expected until 2028, so skipping the alpha means a longer wait. Temtem: Pioneers offers a survival-focused experience, appealing to a slightly different audience, while still featuring the beloved creatures and monster-catching gameplay of Temtem. Existing Temtem fans will finally be able to explore a new area called Downbelow.
Temtem: Pioneers is Survival Meets Monster Taming in the Downbelow
The original Temtem game took players on an adventure through six islands in the Airborne Archipelago, traveling between them on a ship called the Narwhal. In Temtem: Pioneers, the story begins with the Narwhal crashing on the Downbelow – the ground-level part of the game world, contrasting with the floating Airborne Archipelago. This largely unknown area is often feared by those who live above, but it will be the central location in the new game.
The Kickstarter campaign for Temtem: Pioneers is doing very well, and the developers are revealing more details about the game and the creatures you’ll collect. The Downbelow area will be important for surviving in this monster-catching adventure for several key reasons:
- Unlike Temtem, where Tems are found in tall grass like Pokemon, they will be overworld spawns in Temtem: Pioneers, making the Downbelow’s various biomes important to determine what kind of critters will be available there.
- Two of the completed stretch goals for Temtem: Pioneers were biomes — Crystal Biome and Dark Forest Biome, featuring Crystal and Mental Tems, respectively.
- Normally, you need to collect and manage resources in survival games, and you can do that in the Downbelow in Temtem: Pioneers. Resources may depend on progression and biomes.
- You can explore the Downbelow by walking and running, but you can also use mounts as traversal companions, as they will be Temtem themselves.
- The Tems found in the Dowbelow are not the same as those in the Airborne Archipelago. Temtem‘s Digital Tems are not available in this new game, but there are several new Tems to find and collect in the Downbelow to make up for it.
- There will be bosses to defeat in the Downbelow to gain access to new areas and rare materials. They will be similar to Alpha Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A in terms of concept, as they are bigger than regular Tems, more aggressive, and more powerful.
- Temtem: Pioneers is still a monster-taming game at its core, so you will be able to explore the Downbelow and collect resources with Tems at your side to help you fight off wild Tems and gather materials more quickly.
I’m so excited about Temtem: Pioneers! You actually are a pioneer in the game. You play as one of the first people to crash-land in the Downbelow, and your job is to explore this brand new, previously unknown area. It’s like being the first to discover a whole new world, and that’s why it’s called ‘Pioneers’!

The Downbelow is a brand new region in the game that’s been hinted at throughout the original, but never actually seen by players or characters. Like many survival games, you’ll be able to build a base in Temtem: Pioneers, but instead of building it on the Airborne Archipelago, your base will be located in the Downbelow. The Archipelago will be off-limits in this game.
