WARNING! The following post contains spoilers for Mortal Kombat 2.
The new movie Mortal Kombat 2 arrives in theaters this weekend and is expected to be a big success. The sequel, directed by Simon McQuoid, delivers the Mortal Kombat tournament that fans were hoping to see in the first film. The story centers on Shao Khan’s desire for power and the efforts of Earthrealm’s heroes – Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, Jax, Sonya Blade, Cole Young, and Raiden – to stop him.
If you’re wondering how Mortal Kombat 2 wraps things up, the movie doesn’t center heavily on the tournament itself, but it definitely features some very violent fatalities. Here’s a detailed explanation of the movie’s ending and which characters don’t survive.
How Does Mortal Kombat 2 End?
The story of Mortal Kombat 2 follows a tournament where fighters battle to prevent Shao Khan from becoming a god and taking over Earthrealm. The game builds to a final, intense fight between Kitana and Shao Khan. Kitana, originally a fighter from Outworld, sides with Earthrealm and becomes its last hope. In a climactic battle, Kitana defeats Shao Khan, ending his reign with a brutal finishing move using her signature fans.
Kitana can defeat Shao Kahn only because Johnny Cage and Kano manage to destroy the amulet stolen by Noob Sabot (Bi-Han) while in the Netherrealm. They receive crucial assistance: Scorpion joins the fight against his longtime enemy, and Jade defects to their side.
Now that Shao Kahn has been defeated, Raiden’s stolen energy is restored. The team comes back together, but they quickly receive a new assignment. At the end of Mortal Kombat 2, the group likely journeys to Netherrealm – or another realm – along with Quan Chi, all with the aim of saving their captured friends.
There is no post-credits scene in Mortal Kombat 2.
Who Dies in Mortal Kombat 2?
Given that Mortal Kombat 2 is based on a fighting game known for its violence, you’d anticipate high stakes and plenty of character deaths. The film certainly delivers on the gory deaths fans expect, and many characters don’t make it to a potential Mortal Kombat 3. While the movie doesn’t have quite as many deaths as some might expect, the choices of who dies are likely to be surprising.
Most fights in the Mortal Kombat tournaments end with a finishing move, though not every one does. The first movie mostly kept its heroes alive while treating the villains as expendable. However, the second film takes a different approach.
Perhaps the most surprising death in Mortal Kombat 2 is that of Liu Kang, who was previously established as Earth’s greatest warrior. However, both he and the audience discover that isn’t true, and he’s defeated by Shao Kahn. But this might not be the end for Liu Kang—or many of the other main characters—as a future installment could focus on finding a way to bring the fallen back from what appears to be an incomplete death.
The most shocking death in the film is Cole Young, who was the central character in the first Mortal Kombat movie. In the sequel, he’s quickly moved to the side, mainly serving to show how Shao Kahn gained immortality through the amulet. Liu Kang’s death is presented as temporary, but I doubt Cole will be so lucky in the third Mortal Kombat film.
Other Mortal Kombat 2 Character Deaths:
- Revenant Sindel loses her fight to Sonya but Shao Khan revives her, so she’s not techincally dead but really isn’t alive.
- Like Liu Kang, Jax is summarily dispatched by Shao Khan in the climactic fight sequence. I wouldn’t be surprised if his death is permanent.
- Bi Han/Sub-Zero/Noob Saibot dies again at the hands of Jade, Scorpion, Johnny Cage, and Kano.
- Kung Lao gets a gruesome hat buzz saw death after his fight with Liu Kang. But it sounds like Liu Kang intends to “rescue” him from that fate.
- Shao Khan gets a similar buzzsaw treatment, only with Kitana’s fans vertically slicing his skull into pieces.
What Will Mortal Kombat 3 Be About?
Even though Mortal Kombat 2 doesn’t really make death feel final, the movie had some unexpected moments until the very end. When the filmmakers announced Mortal Kombat 3 wouldn’t include the traditional tournament, fans wondered what the next movie would be about. Now, we’re starting to get some answers.
The next installment of the story appears to center around a journey into the Netherrealm to save fallen champions, and it’s likely we’ll see Scorpion return. A Mortal Kombat movie just wouldn’t feel complete without him! I expect Liu Kang will become a powerful, god-like figure in the third film, possibly leading to a showdown with Shang Tsung. The villain, Shang Tsung, didn’t get enough screen time in the recent movie, so I’m sure there are larger plans for him. Only time will tell what those plans are.
