Creating manga is incredibly demanding work. In recent years, we’ve seen increasing awareness of the difficulties mangaka experience. The most significant issue is the immense strain it puts on their health, both physically and mentally.
It’s become increasingly common for manga creators to stop working on their series. Over time, this has happened more and more, with many authors pausing their work indefinitely, leaving their manga unfinished. But author burnout isn’t the only reason a manga might never reach its ending; other issues can also prevent a series from being completed.
8. Vagabond
- Author: Takehiko Inoue
Many consider Takehiko Inoue’s Vagabond to be his masterpiece. The manga started in 1998 and was published consistently for years, but it stopped releasing new chapters in May 2015. Inoue had initially hoped to finish it within a couple of years, but he eventually lost interest and put the series on hold. As of now, there are no plans to continue Vagabond.
Vagabond is a reimagining of Eiji Yoshikawa’s classic novel, Musashi. The series is enhanced by Inoue’s unique additions and stunning artwork. It explores the life of Miyamoto Musashi, showing his journey to becoming a master swordsman.
7. Berserk
- Author: Kentarou Miura
Berserk is widely considered the defining work of the late Kentaro Miura, and he dedicated immense effort to its creation, placing it among the highest-rated manga of any kind. Sadly, Miura passed away in 2023, leaving the future of the series uncertain. His close friend, Kouji Mori, is now working to finish the story, a commendable undertaking. However, many fans still deeply miss Miura’s involvement.
Berserk tells the story of Guts, a skilled warrior who suffers a terrible loss and dedicates his life to seeking revenge against the one who caused it.
6. Hunter x Hunter
- Author: Yoshihiro Togashi
Many fans consider Hunter x Hunter to be the greatest shonen manga ever created, and it truly delivers a memorable story. What really sets it apart is its well-developed and easy-to-understand power system, carefully crafted by Yoshihiro Togashi.
Hunter x Hunter first stopped publishing in 2009 due to the author, Togashi, having health problems. While he’s released some chapters since then, his updates haven’t been regular. Interestingly, Togashi has already decided how the story will end.
5. Duranki
- Author: Kentarou Miura
Duranki might not be as well-known as other manga, but it’s still a fantastic read. Created by Kentarou Miura, it features the beautiful artwork fans would expect.
4. Frieren
- Author: Kanehito Yamada
I’m absolutely loving Frieren! It’s become a huge hit, and honestly, it deserves all the praise it’s getting. The anime adaptation is just fantastic – it really brought this amazing series to a much wider audience, and you can definitely see that reflected in how many copies are flying off the shelves. It’s incredible to see such a high-quality adaptation help a manga reach this level of popularity!

Even though the first season of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has finished airing, the manga it’s based on hasn’t resumed publication after a break. The manga has paused twice for extended periods, and this latest break has lasted several months. It seems the author and artist are taking time to prioritize their health.
3. Nana
- Author: Ai Yazawa
Nana is a highly relatable manga series created by Ai Yazawa. It tells the story of two young women, both named Nana, who have very different personalities and life paths.
The manga stopped being published in 2009 and hasn’t returned since. There are currently no plans for it to continue.
2. One Punch Man
- Author: ONE
One Punch Man is a truly exceptional action series. It skillfully combines exciting battles, clever comedy, and heartfelt moments. The incredible writing by ONE and stunning illustrations by Yusuke Murata make it a captivating and highly enjoyable experience.
As a huge fan, it’s honestly a little worrying how much the manga is getting delayed! It seems like ONE is such a perfectionist that he keeps revisiting and rewriting key parts of the story, which I totally respect as an artist, but it’s making me fear we might never actually see it finished. He’s absolutely entitled to work on it however he wants, but it’s definitely impacting the speed things are moving and making a complete ending feel further and further away.
1. Ranking of Kings
- Author: Sosuke Toka
I’ve been watching ‘Ranking of Kings,’ and it’s a really compelling story. It centers around Bojji, a young prince who everyone seems to look down on and mistreat. What’s amazing is that, despite all the negativity he faces, he never gives up or loses hope. It’s really inspiring to see his unwavering spirit.
The Ranking of Kings manga is still being published, which is encouraging for fans. However, it’s worth remembering that the series took a significant break and didn’t continue until December 2023. We hope the author maintains this momentum and prioritizes their well-being.
