10 Roguelikes That Are Instantly Fun, Ranked

Because I love indie games and often play in bursts, roguelikes have really become a core part of my gaming experience.

I usually fill small pockets of free time by playing games like these instead of endlessly browsing bad news, and that’s why I appreciate what they offer.

I’ve spent a lot of time playing procedurally generated games – everything from the big hits to some hidden gems – over the past few years, and I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon.

10. ROBOBEAT

Shooting at Rhythm

I don’t usually enjoy rhythm games, but I really like when other types of games borrow those gameplay ideas. That’s exactly what ROBOBEAT does – it combines rhythm game elements with the fast-paced action of a first-person shooter.

The best way to understand this game is to imagine a mix of Metal: Hellsinger and Dead Cells. Like those games, it involves shooting to the rhythm of the music, but each playthrough features randomly generated levels, a variety of weapons, and different upgrades.

The satisfying gunplay is immediately enjoyable, even before the roguelike features come into play. You’ll feel great simply shooting robots, especially because you can choose the music you play while doing it.

ROBOBEAT is a really enjoyable game that keeps you moving to the music. You can play for a short while or get completely lost in it – either way, it’s a blast!

9. CloverPit

The Dopamine of Betting with Nothing to Lose

Even though I didn’t spend a lot of time playing CloverPit compared to other roguelikes, it was one of the most gripping and exciting games I’ve ever played in the genre.

Like the popular game Balatro, this title takes a well-known concept and enhances it with randomly generated elements, subtle bonuses, a vibrant and chaotic presentation, and a playful, almost taunting, attitude – all of which combine to create an incredibly addictive experience.

That first pull of the slot machine lever, watching the reels spin and hoping for a winning combination – especially five diamonds in a row and a growing payout – creates an incredible feeling. It’s the excitement of taking a chance without actually risking anything significant.

I’m totally hooked on CloverPit! What really grabbed me is how cleverly designed it is – especially those cards that change how you play and the whole quest to unlock the true ending. It’s just incredibly addictive!

8. Hell Clock

Diablo meets Hades in Brazil

As someone who loves both Diablo and Hades, I was thrilled to find Hell Clock. It perfectly captures the feel of both games, making it a real treat to play.

Don’t expect a completely new gaming experience, but if you enjoy roguelites with satisfying progression, beautiful visuals, and solid combat, this game is a hidden treasure.

I’m really drawn to how this game breaks away from common fantasy tropes. Instead, it’s uniquely based on the historical Canudos War in Brazil, which makes each playthrough captivating both in terms of gameplay and the unfolding story.

You can definitely see the influence of Hades in the game’s design and gameplay. Combining that with the dungeon crawling and combat of Diablo creates a surprisingly enjoyable and effective blend.

7. Wizard of Legend

Becoming the Ultimate Sorcerer

I loved watching shows like Dragon Ball and Avatar: The Last Airbender as a kid, and I always dreamed of being a wizard. Few games have let me live out that fantasy as well as Wizard of Legend.

I remember this game getting me through some really tough times – my country had blackouts almost every day, sometimes lasting six hours! What kept me coming back, though, was how new and exciting it always felt, even after playing for ages. I honestly lost tons of hours to it, and it never got old.

The game is challenging and offers a huge variety of powers to experiment with. This makes it incredibly fun to play again and again, and the resulting skills are visually impressive and satisfying to use.

Discovering all the spells, relics, and robes is incredibly engaging, making it easy to lose yourself in the game – whether you’re a new player or a seasoned one.

6. Enter the Gungeon

Shots to Share Eternally

I’m honestly not very good at Enter the Gungeon, but I still believe it’s one of the most fun and well-made roguelike games out there.

I’ve lost track of how much time I’ve spent playing, but I keep finding new weapons and bosses – each one more surprising than the last. It’s great because you always feel like there’s something exciting just around the corner.

The game is surprisingly challenging, especially since each attempt doesn’t offer much in the way of improvement. However, it’s also incredibly addictive and keeps you playing until you become skilled enough to truly conquer it.

It’s a hard game to get into, but if you love gaming, Enter the Gungeon is fantastic and could keep you entertained for a very long time.

5. The Rogue Prince of Persia

A Spectacular Flow

Given how well-made it is, and that it’s made by the same team behind Dead Cells, I’m surprised The Rogue Prince of Persia isn’t more popular.

Despite being relatively short and streamlined, this game’s combat and platforming are incredibly fun – I rarely enjoy games this much, and it’s completely engrossing.

Compared to Enter the Gungeon, this game is much more approachable, which some hardcore fans of the genre might not appreciate. However, players new to randomly generated games will likely find it incredibly enjoyable and a standout title.

The Rogue Prince of Persia delivers on all fronts – beautiful art, impressive animations, engaging gameplay, challenging bosses, and a consistently satisfying sense of progress. It’s a fantastic roguelite and a great place to start if you’re new to the genre.

4. Have a Nice Death

Being the Grim Reaper is Glorious

I didn’t think any 2D game could match the amazing controls and gorgeous art of Hollow Knight, but Have a Nice Death completely surprised me – and in a fantastic way!

After playing video games for over twenty years, I rarely encounter combat and platforming so flawlessly executed that it’s nearly perfect. It truly emphasizes that failure comes down to player skill, not the game itself.

Okay, so this game is tough at first – it really pushes your system to its limits. But honestly, the way it lets you slowly improve with each run makes it totally manageable as you get better. For the first few hours, the awesome combat is what really carries you, with tons of different weapons, powers, and abilities to play around with. It’s super engaging even when it’s kicking my butt!

After putting in a good amount of time, everything clicks, and the game becomes incredibly fun. In fact, I think Have a Nice Death is the most overlooked gem in its genre.

3. Ball X Pit

Numbers, Colors, and Lots of Dopamine

Brick Breaker is a timeless game, and it took a while for a unique version to appear. Thankfully, Ball X Pit combined it with the gameplay of Loop Hero, creating a really interesting and enjoyable experience.

I’m getting older and have a lot on my plate, but I still spent countless nights playing this game. It grabbed me from the very beginning and I just couldn’t stop.

The exciting battles and diverse combat, combined with managing resources after each mission, were incredibly addictive and made it hard to put the game down once I started playing.

As you get further into the game, you’ll really enjoy building more complicated and powerful setups, and watching your city become more efficient. It’s designed so that at every stage, you should be having a blast!

2. Absolum

A Prestigious Beat ‘Em Up

The team behind the acclaimed Streets of Rage 4 has delivered another fantastic beat ’em up with Absolum. What’s particularly noteworthy is that it also works incredibly well as a roguelike, offering a unique and engaging experience.

This game is a standout in its genre because, unlike many others that take dozens of hours to become enjoyable, it offers satisfying combat and a rewarding sense of progress right from the beginning.

Honestly, with four different characters to play, tons of areas to explore full of secrets, and all the ways you can customize your build with talismans and abilities, I really don’t think Absolum won’t grab you right from the start. Plus, you can play with friends, which is awesome!

This game gets progressively more challenging in a well-balanced way, and its story unfolds naturally. The visuals are beautiful, and each boss fight is unique and exciting. While it’s a fantastic beat ’em up, it also brings a lot to the roguelike genre, making it a truly valuable game.

1. Vampire Survivors

An Unprecedented Addiction

Despite its simple gameplay and being created by just one developer, Vampire Survivors is surprisingly addictive, making it a fascinating example of game design.

It’s no surprise this game inspired a new kind of roguelike. Its captivating gameplay is almost unbelievable, able to completely absorb you and make hours fly by – a rare feat in gaming.

With so many characters, weapons, enemies, upgrades, and environments, the visual spectacle of everything happening on screen is incredibly satisfying, to the point where it doesn’t even matter that you’re not directly controlling the action.

By concentrating only on where your character moves – with attacks happening automatically – the game encourages careful planning and a thoughtful approach. This style really shines alongside the constant stream of details appearing on screen, and it’s all made possible by the game’s procedural generation, creating a surprisingly effective combination.

Lots of games have tried to capture the magic of Vampire Survivors, and while some are good, none quite feel the same. It’s so incredibly addictive that I almost hesitate to recommend it – it will completely take over your life!
