The original Naruto manga finished in November 2014 in issue 50 of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump. Since then, the Naruto universe has evolved, particularly with the Boruto series, which takes place more than ten years after the Fourth Great Ninja War. A major difference in this new era is the significant increase in technology, leading to the creation of Scientific Ninja Tools used by many ninja. While these tools were more central at the start of the series, the authors have scaled back their importance, though they still appear occasionally.
Some Naruto fans haven’t embraced the introduction of Scientific Ninja Tools, but recent comments from creator Masashi Kishimoto explain why these technological advancements were essential after the Fourth Great Ninja War.
Newly Unearthed Kishimoto Comments Show That Peace Led To Ninja Technology In The Boruto Era
As a huge fan of Naruto, I’ve always been fascinated by the incredibly rich history behind the ninja world. It’s a history soaked in conflict, stretching back centuries! Before the Hidden Villages were even a thing, there was the Warring States period – constant fighting between clans, many of whom worked as mercenaries. And even before that, ninjutsu was used to create chaos everywhere. Honestly, the history of shinobi shows they’ve always had a pretty intense thirst for battle. But what really stands out to me is the Fourth Great Ninja War. It wasn’t just about defeating the biggest villains, like Madara and Kaguya, it actually united all five Hidden Villages – something I never thought I’d see! It was a truly brilliant moment for the shinobi world.
For the first time ever, the ninja villages united and achieved lasting peace. This peace has continued for decades, leading to unprecedented cooperation between nations. Kishimoto, the creator of the series, has explained that this peaceful era directly led to the development of Scientific Ninja Tools. While it might not be immediately obvious, this history creates a rich and believable world in Boruto.
I was struck by how the series concluded with such a sense of calm. The ending suggested that significant technological progress was achieved because of a long period of peace. Do you believe peace is a key factor in creating wealth and success?
Masashi Kishimoto: Yes indeed.
How Kishimoto’s Introduction Of Technology Shows Great Worldbuilding
Fans have had varying reactions to the technology introduced in the Boruto series. While some enjoy the new ninja tech and how it changes up fight scenes, others prefer the classic ninja style. Ultimately, whether people like it or not is a matter of personal preference, but the important thing is how these new tools impact the Naruto universe as a whole.
Looking at what the creator of Naruto, Masashi Kishimoto, has said about the origins of ninja technology reveals just how well-developed the world of the series is. The advanced technology seen in Boruto wasn’t added randomly; it wasn’t just for the new generation. Instead, it’s a natural consequence of the unprecedented cooperation between ninja villages that began during the Fourth Great Ninja War.
The world of Boruto is enjoying a time of peace, with no ongoing wars or immediate threats. This has allowed technology to flourish during the time skip and the period leading up to it, benefiting both ordinary citizens and ninja. With less need for combat, science has rapidly advanced.
I watched Naruto, full of energy as always, challenge Sasuke. He said, basically, ‘If you’ve got time to talk, then help me out and let’s work together to create a peaceful world!’ It was right there in chapter 699, a really hopeful moment.
This creative choice might not please all fans, but it logically fits the world of Boruto. It demonstrates the detailed storytelling and world-building skills of Masashi Kishimoto and Mikio Ikemoto. As the period of peace continues, it’s natural that technology would advance.

Why The Otsutsuki And Karma Function Offer More As A Plot Point In The Boruto Series
While the ninja technology in Boruto is a cool addition to the series and well-integrated, it’s not what makes the story truly captivating. At its heart, Naruto is about ninja battles – ninjas fighting each other, or facing off against the powerful Otsutsuki clan. This central conflict remains the driving force of the story, even with the introduction of new technology. Naruto, Sasuke, and the other ninjas are still dedicated to protecting the world from the threat of the Otsutsuki.
Even with the addition of advanced technology in the Boruto series, the fundamental themes and plot elements from the original Naruto – like the Shinju – remain surprisingly important. This demonstrates the authors’ cleverness and commitment to the series’ core values. While ninja technology is interesting, it’s still developing. The essence of a shinobi – their skills and spirit – stays constant, no matter the time period or the tools they use. Kishimoto and Ikemoto have effectively highlighted this in the Boruto manga, particularly in the recent Two Blue Vortex arc, showing that the heart of a ninja doesn’t change with new weapons or advancements.
Kishimoto and Ikemoto deserve praise for how they’ve developed the Otsutsuki backstory and expanded the power system with additions like Karma. They’ve built on what already existed instead of completely changing it. If science is introduced into the world of Boruto, it should happen slowly and naturally. A good example is Boruto’s new sword, a scientific ninja tool upgraded by Sumire in chapter 28 of Two Blue Vortex. This shows that technology and traditional ninja skills can work together effectively if the authors handle it well.
