As a big fan of Marathon, I was pretty shocked to hear about Sony taking a big financial hit with Bungie, but still wanting to keep the game going. It’s good to know Season 2 is still probably happening, even though sales haven’t been amazing. Honestly, a lot of us who stopped playing a while back might be willing to jump back in when that drops. Like a lot of these kinds of shooter games, Marathon hit a point where it felt really hard for newer or casual players to keep up. But things are looking up! A recent update actually made a huge difference, giving players who aren’t spending extra money a much better chance in the game.
Marathon players who’ve been discouraged by powerful, well-equipped groups might be looking forward to the next reset, but they’d be better off enjoying the game as it is right now. With the reset only four weeks away, players will be transferring their best items out of storage, creating opportunities to find rare weapons you might not have tried before. Plus, recent updates, specifically changes to starter kits in version 1.0.6.3, have made it much easier to compete against these heavily geared players, leveling the playing field for everyone. It’s a great change that should influence how factions improve in the future.
Marathon’s Green Free Kits Are Its Smartest Change Yet
Although Marathon is designed so players can quickly defeat enemies, it often feels unfair to lose to a well-equipped team without a shield. While challenging gameplay and earning long-term benefits are typical for this type of shooter, a few weeks in, only the most committed players are truly succeeding. To make the game fairer, Bungie didn’t wait for a major update – they quickly introduced better free equipment for everyone.

With a basic shield, a couple of good weapons, and improved healing, players can now win fights that previously felt unwinnable using only starter gear. This change is especially helpful for casual players who don’t spend a lot of in-game currency, making challenges more achievable and player-versus-player combat more balanced. While consistently strong starter kits shouldn’t be the standard – otherwise, upgrading gear wouldn’t feel rewarding – it’s a fantastic way to enjoy the game in the final weeks before a seasonal reset. The positive feedback from players suggests Bungie should consider options for improving free starter kits in the future.
Currently, the most powerful upgrades in the game focus on improving a specific, solo playstyle using Rooks, which isn’t for everyone. It would be better if those upgrades instead focused on making Sponsored Kits – a challenging aspect of the game – more enjoyable. Players could then gradually improve these kits over time by completing contracts and leveling up with different factions. For example, a specific upgrade could unlock a green backpack, another could provide green weapons, and so on, improving different parts of the kit. The recent decision to make certain kits freely available shows Bungie is listening to player feedback, and it could open the door to more rewarding upgrades for all players. While these kits could remain free for a while, dedicated players could also earn them early through effort, making it easier to progress and fill their storage.
The new season of Marathon should arrive in June and continue through August, but we don’t have an exact release date yet.
Marathon’s 1.0.6.3 Update Makes Other Great Changes
If you were worried about the difficulty in Marathon, you should definitely check out the latest update! It includes some great balancing changes that make the game much more competitive. Now, all activities on each map have a chance to reward valuable salvage, giving everyone a way to get powerful upgrades, even if they avoid challenging areas. The update also fixes the issue with excessive grenade use and improves the rewards from the CARRI armory. If you were thinking of taking a break until Season 2, this update makes it worth jumping back in right away.
