Overwatch Giving Away 10 Free Mythic Skins, But There’s a Catch

To celebrate its 10-year anniversary, Overwatch is giving Chinese players 10 free, exclusive Mythic skins. This is also meant to make up for the fact that players in China couldn’t access the game for the past two years.

Blizzard launched Overwatch on May 24, 2016, and it quickly changed what people expected from team-based shooter games. It was a huge success, winning Game of the Year and becoming one of Blizzard’s most important franchises, alongside titles like Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo. The original game was replaced by Overwatch 2 on October 2, 2022, and Overwatch 2 was later renamed back to Overwatch on February 10, 2026, just before the game celebrated its 10th anniversary.

Chinese Overwatch Players Get 10 Free Mythic Skins for Anniversary Event

As the anniversary event approaches, Overwatch is starting to reveal its plans, and Chinese players are in for a treat! A recent announcement on Weibo, shared by Overwatch fan SkaVorah on Twitter, revealed that Chinese players will receive 10 free Mythic hero skins simply for logging in. While the exact skins haven’t been announced, a promotional image shows the first 14 Mythic skins as possibilities. The event starts May 13th in China and is expected to include additional rewards beyond the free skins.

This event isn’t just a celebration; it’s a way to help Chinese players catch up after a long break. Blizzard and NetEase, the company that brought Overwatch to China, ended their partnership in January 2023, making the game unavailable. They reached a new agreement in April 2024, and Overwatch returned on February 19, 2025, but Chinese fans had already missed out on Seasons 3 through 14. While they can still buy those season’s cosmetic items, it’s expensive – a single special hero skin can cost around $80 if you don’t get it through the game’s Battle Pass.

As a long-time Overwatch player, I’ve been seeing a lot of frustration lately, and honestly, I get it. It’s great that Chinese players are getting so much love after not being able to play for two years – things like the OW x Naraka: Bladepoint event, the music festival, and the Valentine’s Day stuff all look amazing. But as someone outside of China, it feels a little unfair that they’re getting all these exclusive events while the rest of us aren’t getting much of anything. It’s awesome they’re back, but it would be nice to see some of that attention spread around a bit!

Good news for Overwatch fans! A 10th anniversary event is coming soon. The trailer for Overwatch Reign of Talon Season 2 revealed the celebration will start shortly after the midseason update, expected around May 12th. We don’t yet know the exact rewards, and it probably won’t include ten Mythic skins, but hopefully, there will be plenty of generous gifts so everyone can enjoy the festivities.
