It feels like each year, a game released early sets the tone for the entire gaming year, and this year that game is Pokopia. It’s not only the best-rated game in the Pokemon series, but it’s also a fantastic life simulation game that’s challenging everything else in the genre. This success is good news for the next Animal Crossing game, and according to recent buzz, Pokopia is poised to stay popular for a long time.
A trustworthy source suggests that Pokemon Winds and Waves is planned for release in late 2027. Until then, Pokopia will be the focus, and it’s expected to receive updates throughout this year and much of 2027. Pokopia features a consistent stream of in-game events, and a full list of its downloadable content (DLC) biomes has already appeared online. The DLC will also introduce over 100 new Pokemon, including the starter Pokemon from Pokemon Winds and Waves – likely as a way to connect the two games. While the base version of Pokopia currently includes 300 Pokemon, there are over 700 more that could be added, and information suggests that at least 25 of them are nearly confirmed.
Pokopia is Saying Goodbye to HM Slaves
From the moment Pokopia was announced, and especially after its release, players quickly realized a central idea behind the game: the concept of “HM Slaves.” Many joked that Pokopia makes players become those HM Slaves, and that’s largely accurate. Longtime Pokemon fans will remember that “HM Slave” was a term used in the older games to describe Pokemon stuck with Hidden Machine moves. These moves – like Fly, Cut, and Surf – couldn’t be unlearned (at least, not easily), and players often had to rely on specific Pokemon to use them in order to progress through the game. Several of these HMs were used to unlock new areas or overcome obstacles.

Starting with the fourth generation of Pokémon games, Hidden Machines (HMs) gradually became less important. By the seventh generation, Sun and Moon, HMs were completely removed, and this continued in the eighth and ninth generations. The upcoming Pokémon Winds and Waves (Generation 10) is also expected to exclude them. Because of this change, Pokopia should include Pokémon that were previously required for HMs, giving them the recognition they deserve.

- There are, of course, other contenders for HM Slaves, but these are often the most associated with the role
Notably, Pokopia already features commonly used HM slaves like Lapras, the Piplup evolutionary line, and Wingull. Dragonite technically could be used this way, but it’s too powerful to waste on HM moves. Besides Piplup, other popular Water-type starters – Feraligatr and Samurott – are also often used as HM slaves in some playthroughs. However, perhaps the most unexpected discovery when comparing HM slaves to all Pokémon in Pokopia is that Bibarel isn’t included.

Bibarel became well-known as the Pokémon that learned almost all the Hidden Machine (HM) moves in Generation 4. Because of this, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Bibarel get some special attention in the Pokopia DLC. These Pokémon might also be added through limited-time events, but considering their importance to the games and Pokopia‘s focus as a life simulation game, I expect that among the 100 DLC Pokémon—which will include many popular and powerful choices—there will be a place for the Pokémon that were essential for getting around in older games. After all, HMs are no longer a feature, and Pokopia seems designed to celebrate those classic game mechanics.
