The Boruto series hasn’t resonated with fans quite like its predecessor, Naruto. It’s understandable, as Naruto set a very high standard. Boruto does have its weaknesses, and a major one is that it hasn’t given enough attention to many interesting characters – both those we already knew and new ones. Over time, these characters ended up feeling underdeveloped and less important to the overall story.
7. Sakura Haruno
Sakura Haruno has become one of the most powerful ninjas in the Boruto series, and now that she’s at her peak, fans are hoping to see her play a bigger role. While the story focuses on the new generation, characters like Sakura deserve more involvement. Unfortunately, she hasn’t been featured much, which has unfortunately made her a less impactful character than many expected.
6. Konohamaru Sarutobi
Konohamaru is a frustrating character for many Boruto fans. While he showed promise in Naruto, he’s consistently been portrayed as weak and ineffective in the sequel series. There’s little indication he’ll improve, even after the recent time skip. In fact, his students are now stronger than he is, making him a stark contrast to the powerful and respected Kakashi.
5. Mitsuki
Similar to Konohamaru, Mitsuki didn’t get much focus throughout most of the Boruto series, and wasn’t given a chance to really show his potential. His own story arcs were largely ignored, making him feel like a character whose absence wouldn’t have changed the plot much. Hopefully, the series will give him a more important role going forward.
4. Hinata Hyuga
Hinata Hyuga deserved a bigger part in the Boruto series. As a descendant of the Otsutsuki clan and Naruto’s wife, she’s a strong ninja who could have contributed much more than simply being a mother at home. Sadly, the writers didn’t utilize her potential, and she was largely excluded from the main storyline, appearing mostly in domestic scenes with her family.
3. Team 10
Team 10 – Shikadai, Inojin, and Chocho – haven’t had much focus in the Boruto series. While Inojin has recently gotten a little more attention, the others felt almost absent, especially in the first part of the story. This highlights a weakness in the writing, where supporting characters and the world around them aren’t developed enough. Although they’ve been given slightly bigger roles in the Two Blue Vortex arc, their contributions still feel disappointing.

2. Rock Lee
It’s strange that Rock Lee, a powerful ninja from the previous generation who mastered the Eight Inner Gates, hasn’t played a bigger role in the Boruto series. Given his strength, fans expected to see him heavily involved in major events, but he’s been largely sidelined.
Rock Lee, who once showed great promise and power, unfortunately became a less impactful character in Boruto, similar to what happened with many other characters in the series.
1. Kakashi Hatake
Although Kakashi, now the Sixth Hokage, isn’t as powerful as he once was, he still brings a wealth of experience and considerable strength. He’s been noticeably absent throughout much of Boruto: while he’s made a few appearances in the anime, he’s been completely left out of the manga, almost as if he’s no longer part of the story.
Saying he’s disappointing isn’t quite right, considering he hasn’t appeared at all. This is surprising, especially since he was a major character in the original manga. Fans are hoping he’ll make an appearance in Boruto and have a significant role, to honor his past importance.
