Police in Kyoto, Japan, have arrested a man who threatened to bomb Nintendo’s headquarters. He claimed to have planted explosives around the building. Authorities are currently investigating why he made the threats.
The arrest happened shortly after Nintendo revealed price adjustments for the Switch 2. Due to a continuing shortage of DRAM chips – which has significantly increased the cost of key parts – Nintendo is raising the Switch 2’s price by $50 beginning September 1st. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa also suggested that further price changes for the Switch 2 family of consoles are possible in 2026 and 2027.
A New Bomb Threat Against Nintendo Leads To An Arrest
Nintendo’s headquarters in Kyoto recently received bomb threats from a 27-year-old man who has been arrested. The man, who is unemployed, admitted to sending the threats as early as March. According to police reports, a threatening letter arrived on March 13th containing messages like “I’m going to blow you all up” and “This plan cannot be stopped.” These threats caused disruptions to Nintendo’s normal business operations.
Police searched Nintendo’s headquarters in Kyoto and the surrounding areas but found no explosives. The suspect, a 27-year-old man from Hekinan City in Aichi Prefecture, was arrested on May 12th following bomb threats made against the company. While the suspect has reportedly confessed, authorities are still investigating why he made the threats. Even though the threat might turn out to be a false alarm, the investigation is still active.
The recent threat to Nintendo’s Kyoto headquarters isn’t the first time the company has faced such a situation. Earlier in 2024, a 27-year-old man was taken to court for making bomb threats that interrupted the Live Tokyo 2024 event and the Splatoon 3 Koshien 2023 National Finals. Prosecutors originally requested a year in prison. The man explained that he was angry about losing at Splatoon 3 and blamed the game’s design for his losses.

The recent bomb threat targeting Nintendo’s Kyoto office isn’t connected to any previous threats the company has received. Nintendo has announced that the price of the new Switch 2 will increase on September 1st, and they are working to add more value to the console and its games to justify the price change. Despite these threats and the upcoming price increase, Nintendo continues to actively develop new games for the Switch 2.
