Many players worried that support for Marathon would end quickly after its release, especially after Sony announced a significant loss related to the game’s developer, Bungie. However, fans can be relieved to know that the game will continue to receive updates for now. It’s unclear how long this support will last – it could be just Season 2, extend through the end of 2026 and Season 3, or continue long-term – but players can definitely look forward to new content on June 2nd, along with a complete reset of the game’s progress in its first major vault wipe.
As a big fan of extraction shooters, I know wipes are always a bit tough – it means losing all the hard-earned gear and upgrades you’ve spent ages collecting. Some games, like Arc Raiders, let you skip them, which is great, but it looks like Marathon‘s upcoming wipe is going to be mandatory. From what I understand, on June 2nd, everyone will start fresh. This should make things fairer for a while as we all learn the new stuff, like the nighttime version of Dire Marsh. Honestly, I’m a little nervous about losing my progress, but it really does feel like this wipe will kickstart a whole new chapter for Marathon.
Bungie will share more information about the upcoming Marathon Season 2 as its June 2nd release date approaches. Players can expect a new version of the Dire Marsh map set at night, a new character customization option called the Sentinel Shell, and a gameplay feature called The Cradle.
Marathon’s Reset Could Have a Huge Impact, One Way or Another
The idea of resetting progress in extraction shooter games is controversial, especially for people who don’t play them. Asking players to lose all their earned upgrades is a significant request, meaning the game needs to be incredibly fun and rewarding to encourage them to rebuild their characters. While Marathon hasn’t attracted as many players as its developers hoped, those who are playing it are dedicated, and will likely continue to play after the reset. While some worry the reset could drive players away – which would be a major problem for Marathon – it’s likely the change will ultimately benefit the game.

A reset in Marathon would do more than just level the playing field and stop dominant teams from controlling the game. It gives Bungie a chance to revamp how players improve their characters and equipment. This could involve new missions sending players to different areas of the maps, bringing action to previously ignored spots, and expanding the game’s story, allowing the talented voice actors to contribute more. Players could focus on collecting different resources to upgrade their Runners in new ways. For example, instead of upgrading Rooks with Capstones in Season 2, they might use items found in the Armory. Ultimately, a reset could offer a fresh progression system for everyone, including new players, while also letting Bungie incorporate feedback from the first season.
Marathon’s Next Few Weeks Are Going to Be Hectic
As the first season of Marathon comes to a close, players are about to experience a significant shift in the game. In just a few weeks, everyone will lose all their collected items, meaning players will be actively using their best gear now. Expect to find rare weapons, Cryo Vault keys, and valuable backpacks scattered across the maps – though they won’t be easy to get. Bungie seems to anticipate this, with the Cryo Archive event running from May 21st until the new season begins on June 2nd. This gives players a chance to use their hard-earned gear before it’s all reset, effectively turning the map into the “lose everything factory” it’s been jokingly called. To help new and casual players, a free set of basic gear will be available from the Armory each day.
On June 2nd, Marathon is starting fresh. Players will begin with only the cosmetic items, lore, and titles they’ve already unlocked. This means you’ll need to rebuild your progress in the game’s Factions, and even previously common gear will be useful again. Expect plenty of new challenges! While some long-time players might be disappointed by the reset, the game has been getting great reviews lately, so this fresh start could attract new players. Only time will tell, but Tau Ceti IV will continue to offer exciting risks and rewards.
