PS Plus Extra Has 3 Clear Targets with May’s Monthly Games

PlayStation Plus Extra is the top-level subscription, and the new games added for May 2026 really showcase why. This month’s lineup is especially strong, featuring the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 – a game recently voted the best of all time by TopMob readers – alongside a fantastic collection of other titles. It’s clear PlayStation Plus Extra had a specific goal with this selection, successfully hitting three key objectives with this month’s additions.

PlayStation Plus generally follows a predictable pattern across its different levels. The Essential tier, which includes the ‘free’ monthly games, usually offers decent but unremarkable titles – they’re unlikely to attract new subscribers. Most PlayStation owners need this tier to play games online (except for free-to-play games like Fortnite), so they’ll have access to these games regardless. The Extra tier steps it up with a couple of strong titles, alongside a variety of games aimed at different interests. Finally, the Premium tier releases a classic PlayStation game every couple of months, and seems to offer the least value for money despite being the most expensive option.

The PS Plus Premium game for May 2026 is Time Crisis, an on-rail shooter.

PS Plus Extra Games for May 2026 – What Are They?

The PlayStation Plus Extra lineup for May follows the usual pattern, but the released games reveal a clear structure: three distinct categories, plus the standalone title Broken Sword: Shadows of the Templar: Reforged. This enhanced version of a classic adventure game doesn’t quite fit with the others, which fall neatly into open-world titles, challenging ‘soulslike’ games, and smaller indie games exploring dark mythological themes.

Open Worlds, Soulslike Games, and Dark Mythologies, Oh My!

Red Dead Redemption 2 and Star Wars Outlaws Are Fantastic Open-World Games

Red Dead Redemption 2 has been a PlayStation Plus game before, but it’s notable that it’s back now. When it comes to expansive, immersive open-world games, nothing really compares. Few games match the incredible detail and scope of RDR2, making this a big moment for both Rockstar and PlayStation Plus. The story of the Van Der Linde gang and its compelling protagonist, Arthur Morgan, are exceptional, and the game beautifully captures the end of the Wild West era. If you haven’t experienced it yet, its return to PS Plus is the perfect opportunity, especially with the upcoming release of GTA 6.

With Star Wars Outlaws, PS Plus is offering a unique open-world experience. Though it’s claimed to be the first open-world Star Wars game, that’s open to discussion, the game’s world feels incredibly detailed and authentic. It focuses on the gritty side of the Star Wars universe – smuggling, criminal groups, and just trying to survive in the underworld, rather than focusing on Jedi, Sith, and the Force. Outlaws emphasizes stealth more than Red Dead 2, and while it’s different from the open-world style of Rockstar games like RDR2, PS Plus made a great choice by including both it and Red Dead 2 – even if nothing quite measures up to RDR2.

Despite initial sales numbers for Star Wars Outlaws being lower than expected, the game has a dedicated fanbase, as evidenced by an online petition requesting a sequel, Star Wars Outlaws 2.

Flintlock and Enotria Are Different Soulslike Games

Soulslike games are well-liked, and several are already available on PS Plus, but they can be notoriously difficult to learn. Players typically improve by repeatedly dying, staying motivated, and mastering each game individually. While some skills carry over between games, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is designed to be particularly welcoming to newcomers. It offers a more straightforward story, a flintlock fantasy setting instead of dark fantasy, and a difficulty level that’s challenging but fair. This makes Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn an excellent starting point for anyone interested in the Soulslike genre, and it’s now included with PS Plus.

If you’ve finished Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn on PS Plus, Enotria: The Last Song is another great option. Flintlock is designed to be more accessible, while Enotria offers a refreshing change of pace from the often-dark aesthetic of other Soulslike games. Enotria is inspired by Italian culture, featuring bright, Mediterranean environments and a unique atmosphere. While it might have a few imperfections, it delivers the gameplay fans expect with a visually distinct experience.

Bramble and The Thaumaturge Offer Dark Folklore to Players

PlayStation Plus is asking what amazing games should come next, having already delivered fantastic open-world and unique Soulslike titles. The answer? Incredible indie games inspired by dark myths and folklore. The first of these is Bramble: The Mountain King, which draws on Nordic folklore, but focuses on local legends rather than grand myths. The result is a beautifully presented horror game that’s best experienced without knowing too much beforehand.

While Nordic mythology is quite popular, Slavic folklore is less common in video games. That’s what makes The Thaumaturge so exciting! It brings this underrepresented mythology to life with fascinating creatures, a unique system where you collect and use these creatures (called Salutors), and a compelling RPG experience focused on historical investigation and psychology.

PS Plus Set Up 3 Targets, Hit Each One

Okay, as a PlayStation Plus member, I’m seriously impressed with the Extra games dropping this May. They really hit all the right notes with their picks – three different vibes, two awesome games for each, and even a little retro bonus! I’ve actually played everything they’re offering, and honestly, I can recommend it all. But if you’re into mythology and cool stories, you have to check out The Thaumaturge. It’s such a charming game, I’m really hooked!
