Far Far West: Tips and Tricks for Beginners

Far Far West is a first-person shooter that feels similar to games like Helldivers 2, where you try to complete missions and then escape. It seems simple at first, but it actually has a lot of depth and complexity.

The game is full of hidden surprises, like the cactus challenge, offering hours of entertainment. It’s perfectly normal to feel a bit lost at first – many players do!

This guide will help you get started and succeed in this exciting western-themed game. We’ll cover the fundamentals of spells, guns, and missions, but a big part of the fun comes from exploring and figuring things out for yourself!

A Beginner’s Guide to Far Far West

This cooperative western game shares similarities with titles like Deep Rock Galactic and Helldivers, so players familiar with those games will quickly pick it up. Even if you haven’t played those, the game is easy to learn despite having a lot of strategic depth.

Let’s simplify things by looking at the game in three main parts. You’ll need to understand these three areas: Spells, Weapons, and Missions.

Spells: Making a Big Boom

A robotic western wouldn’t be complete without a touch of magic, and Far Far West delivers! Before each mission, you can choose up to three spells to equip and use.

In total, there are five categories of spells to choose from:

  • Pyro
  • Electric
  • Acid
  • Voodoo
  • Cactus

There are five spells in each magic category that players can use during missions. However, you’ll need to earn experience to unlock the more powerful ones. It sounds straightforward, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

You’ll gain experience with spells by actually using them on missions. The more you use a specific spell, like a powerful fire spell, the more experience you’ll earn with it.

Spells aren’t just about dealing damage and winning battles. You can also combine them in many different ways to create powerful new effects, adding a lot of variety to the gameplay.

The best way to understand how your spells work is to practice at the shooting range in the Saloon. Experiment with different combinations to see what happens. Getting comfortable with your spells there will help you become a powerful legend.

Weapons: Becoming a Gunslinger

What’s a cowboy game without a little shooting? Luckily, this one lets you take down some spooky skeletons, and it already has plenty of weapons to choose from, with even more planned for the future.

You’ll have two types of weapons to choose from: primary and secondary. Before each mission, you can equip one of each. It’s smart to think carefully about which weapons you choose, as some work better with specific spells than others.

For Primary guns, you have one of five choices:

  • Quad Cylinder
  • Shotgun
  • Long Ranger
  • Minigun
  • Leveredge

For Secondary guns, you have another five choices:

  • Revolver
  • Bow
  • Dual Revolvers
  • Boomerang
  • Sheriff Stars

Choose the weapon that fits your playstyle best! You’ll begin with the Quad Cylinder and the Revolver. To get other weapons, you’ll need to find hidden pieces – called fragments – by checking the weapon menu and searching the game world.

You can find these pieces while completing missions in a few different locations. Look out for Forges, Loot Goblins, and Bosses. Defeating enemies or finishing objectives at these locations will reward you with a fragment.

Even after gathering enough fragments, you’ll need a significant amount of gold to purchase the new weapons. Plus, you can improve these weapons further by using Joker cards and Souls, and boosting their stats with even more gold.

You can always refund some gold spent to put the points into other categories.

Hero Customization: Making the Wild West Your Own

Things get really cool from here! As you gain levels, you can improve specific character stats by spending gold, and you can also use Jokers to enhance them, just like you did with weapons.

Okay, so there’s a catch – upgrading stuff here costs way more than it did with the gun upgrades. Thankfully, you can still get your money back if you change your mind, but be warned, those upgrades keep getting pricier and pricier!

These improvements let you customize your character to match how you like to play. If you prefer a fast-paced, aerial style, look for a Joker that boosts your air damage and increase your jump height in the character customization menu.

There are many different ways to approach building your character, so it’s best to try things out before tackling the more challenging levels. You’re nearly set to begin!

Missions: Getting the Hang of Things

Now we get to the heart of this guide: how to play the game. We’ll cover everything you need to know, but ultimately, your success depends on your own skill and practice.

Missions function similarly to other cooperative games: you select a mission and difficulty, then work to complete it. Completing harder missions yields better rewards. Each mission involves a three-part process: an initial setup, a boss encounter, and finally, escaping with your rewards.

The map makes it easy to navigate, with clear lines showing you where to go for each goal. You’ll also find extra objectives scattered around, and completing them will reward you with things like Souls and gold.

Each mission is made up of two randomly chosen elements: a goal and a boss. These two parts don’t seem to be connected – you can encounter any boss regardless of the goal you’re given.

The game features objectives like building explosives or safely transporting dangerous materials. Each boss presents a unique challenge, so it’s important to consider your playstyle – for example, a close-combat build wouldn’t be very effective against a boss that flies.

Defeating enemies and finishing optional tasks can reward you and your team with Jokers. These are temporary items that disappear at the end of the mission, so it’s helpful to collect them whenever you find them.

As you explore the different maps, keep an eye out for hidden quests. Completing the Bell quest, for example, will reward you with free Jokers and help you build a stronger collection. Most maps also feature one special character who offers a quest that unlocks a valuable item.

These maps are full of things to explore, and luckily, you won’t be doing it alone! Your trusty robot horse is there to assist you and quickly get you wherever you need to go.

Tips and Tricks to Success in the Wild West

Now that you’ve got the fundamentals down, here are a few helpful hints to increase your chances of success in this unfamiliar environment. Remember, these are just suggestions – feel free to adapt them to fit your own approach and find what works best for you.

  • Do Everything — Any objectives available on the map to complete will reward you with XP, gold, or Souls, so it’s worth completing everything if you can.
  • Bail When You Need To — You won’t receive most bonuses if you fail a mission, so make sure you’re not overextending yourself before finishing the main objective.
  • Make It Rain — Gold isn’t uncommon, but you’ll go through it quickly. Any time you find a gold rock to mine, you should mine it. This will give you a good store of gold.
  • Use the Shooting Range — Testing some items out in the shooting range is a great idea. It’ll let you understand how some things interact without being locked into it.
  • Be Flexible — Give everything you can a shot. Even if there’s something you aren’t fond of, try to mix it with something else to see some explosive results.
  • Run Away — Sometimes a cowboy can get overrun. Don’t be afraid to hop on your horse and outrun the hordes to get to safety. Survival is key.
  • Open Your Heart and Party — It seems like most cowpolk are willing to help out, and if you’re heading out solo, leave the party open, so they can join in. It doesn’t do any harm to get a little help.

Even with these tips, you’ll only improve with practice. This fast-paced shooting game is a lot of fun, but it has a learning curve, so don’t hesitate to experiment and give it a try!
