The Dark Pictures games let you potentially save every character, but it’s challenging. A single wrong choice can cause a character to die, and those consequences are permanent β you canβt undo them.
Fortunately, Directive 8020 includes a ‘Turning Points’ system that lets you rewind and prevent crew members from dying, especially when playing in Explorer mode. This guide details all the critical turning points in the game where characters are at risk, and provides advice on how to navigate those situations in Directive 8020.
The guide below contains major spoilers for all the episodes.
How to Save Everyone in Directive 8020
Episode 1 – Little Star
You won’t lose the achievement for keeping everyone alive if anyone dies in this part of the game. Carter and Simms might die during quick-time events, but their deaths won’t prevent you from getting the achievement.
Episode 2 – Best Laid Plans
There are no deaths in this episode.
Episode 3 – The Sample
- During βNo Gamesβ, make sure Cernan does not get caught by Williams.
- During βCrashβ, Stafford can die if you fail to get him back to the seat in time. If you deactivated the Landing Gear in Episode 2, make sure to stay seated and do not get up during the crash sequence.
Episode 4 – Dragnet
- During βOverwatchβ, make sure Cooper and Anders successfully escape from Williams.
Episode 5 – Mr. Williams
- During βBurnβ and βWaste Managementβ, make sure Eisele does not get caught.
- During βUnder Pressureβ, your earlier Episode 2 choice becomes important. If you chose to deactivate Fire Control in Episode 2, choose to save Mitchell. Anders will survive but remain injured for some time. If you did not deactivate Fire Control, you can safely choose to save Anders instead. This can also help toward unlocking the Password1 trophy if you previously sedated Williams and agreed to let Anders hack the computer.
Episode 6 – Hostile Takeover
- During βClose Encounterβ, do not fail any QTEs as Eisele can become injured here.
- During βPoint Blankβ, choose not to shoot Williams.
- During βEisele Interrogatedβ, make Stafford ask them to prove they are human.
- During βWhich Eiseleβ, shoot Eisele and not the Newcomer.
Episode 7 – Revelation
- During βSearch Partyβ, take the right path while searching for Anders to find the real one.
- During βPod Roomβ, avoid getting caught by the alien creature.
- During βGeoscienceβ and βHuntβ, do not get caught by the enemy lifeform.
Episode 8 – Come True
- During βSecond Chancesβ, do not leave Williams behind.
- During βRedirectβ, make sure Stafford escapes from the Eisele mimic.
- During βAtriumβ and βMess Hallβ, make sure Eisele escapes the alien creature.
- During βShoggothβ, βTentacle Flailβ, and βCreeperβ, avoid getting caught by the enemy.
- During βSnap Decisionβ, choose to save the crew member.
- During βKnock Knockβ, assuming the survivor is Mitchell, let him inside.
Do not miss or fail any QTEs during the following sections:
- βReturn of the Beastβ
- βUncontainedβ
- βTeardownβ
- βOut of the Panβ
- βFueled Upβ
- βSeal the Exitsβ
- βGrappleβ
If everyone on your crew survives and no one is an Impostor, youβll earn the Humanitarian achievement.
