The Resident Evil 4 remake ranks players based on how quickly they finish the game and how often they save. A faster completion time leads to a higher rank.
The Mercenaries mode in the Resident Evil 4 remake scores you differently than the main game. Instead of focusing on time, your rank β which can be anywhere from A to S++ β is based on how many enemies you defeat and how well you chain those kills together into combos.
Quick Overview of All Rank Requirements in RE4 Remake (Main Game)
| Rank | Assisted | Standard | Hardcore | Professional |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S+ | 4h (NG)* | 5h (NG) | 5.5h (NG) |
|
| S | 4h (NG or NG+) | 5h (NG or NG+) | 5.5 (NG or NG+) | 5.5 h (NG or NG+) |
| A | 15h (NG or NG+) | 12h (NG or NG+) | 10h (NG or NG+) | 7h (NG or NG+) |
| B | No limit | No limit | No limit | No limit |
NG, short for New Game, indicates a rank that can’t be achieved in New Game Plus (NG+). NG+ allows players to start a new game while keeping their previously earned weapons and accessing special guns.
To get the highest rank (S+) on Professional difficulty, you can only manually save the game a total of 15 times.
How difficult the game is affects what you need to do to earn a high rank. For instance, in Resident Evil 4 remake, finishing on the easiest difficulty (Assisted) in less than four hours gets you an S rank. But to achieve the even higher S+ rank, you have to beat the game on a new playthrough, without using any special weapons, and still finish within four hours.
All Save Limitations in Rank, Explained
As a big Resident Evil 4 Remake fan, I’ve been tackling the Professional difficulty, and it’s seriously challenging! If you’re going for that coveted S+ rank, you’re really limited on how many times you can save. It’s not just the main game either β the Separate Ways DLC has the same restriction. Basically, you can’t rely on typewriters to save as much as you’d like. In the main story, you only get 15 saves, which feels pretty tight. But in Separate Ways, they really crank up the difficulty β you’re limited to just 10 saves! It forces you to play much more carefully and really master the game.
There is no save limit for earning other ranks.
How to Check Rank Requirements in RE4 Remake
- Pause the game or head to the main menu
- Open the “Results” tab
- Press the X button on Xbox (Square on the PlayStation)
- See the requirements in the table that pops up
If a rank has a requirement saying “Playthrough: 1,” it means that you have to be on a new save.
Rank Rewards For All Difficulties
Players can unlock 21 different rewards by progressing through the ranks. These include four special outfits β the Chicken Hat, Cat Ears, Fox Tails, and Deer Antlers β which give Leon stat boosts. Two unique weapons, the Handcannon and Chicago Sweeper, are also available. The remaining rewards are various outfits and accessories.
| Rank | Reward |

Mercenaries Rank Requirements
The 1.04 update for the Resident Evil 4 remake introduced a new downloadable content (DLC) called Mercenaries mode. In this mode, players fight off waves of enemies and earn a rank based on how many they defeat and the length of their combo streaks. Unlike the main game, your final score isnβt as affected by how long you take β it focuses more on the number of enemies killed and achieving high combos.
The following table shows the Mercenaries’ ranking requirements.
| Mercenaries Rank | Required Score |
|---|---|
| C | |
| B | 50,000 |
| A | 100,000 |
| S | 200,000 |
| S+ | 500,000 |
| S++ | 1,000,000 |
It took around three hours to finally earn my first S+ rank in Mercenaries mode, but the challenge was definitely rewarding. Keep trying, you’ll get there!
Mercenaries Mode Rank Rewards
As a huge Resident Evil 4 fan, I was so excited to see the Separate Ways DLC add even more to the Mercenaries mode! Now, there are four new rewards you can unlock by mastering the mode and getting those top ranks. Basically, if you can pull off A, S, S+, and S++ ranks, you’ll earn some cool stuff!
- A rank with Leon unlocks Luis.
- A rank with Luis unlocks Krauser.
- A rank with Krauser grants H.U.N.K.
- Completing any map with any rank using Ada unlocks Wesker.
- S rank in all stages with Ada unlocks her Dressed version.
- S rank in all stages with Leon unlocks his Pinstripe version.
The C and S++ ranks do not exist in the Resident Evil 4 remake’s campaign.
