Many fans of shonen anime often talk about the complex power system in Bleach, focusing on concepts like Spiritual Energy, Spiritual Pressure, and Spirit Particles. Even experienced shonen viewers find it hard to fully grasp how the powers work in Bleach because the system is so intricate and confusing.
It’s interesting how many recent anime series have created power systems as intricate as Bleach’s, with abilities based on everything from language and words to gods, abstract ideas, and even the nature of reality. Explaining these systems fully to other fans would be a lot of work, requiring detailed breakdowns and explanations.
6. Supernatural Potions and Divine Pathways
Anime: Lord of Mysteries
I’m completely hooked on Lord of Mysteries – it’s easily one of the best isekai anime to come out recently! What really grabbed me is how intricate the magic system is. It’s all based around these ‘divine pathways’ and potions, and you can either gain incredible powers or lose your mind trying. Plus, it’s not just random power-ups; there’s a whole structure to it. People with abilities, called Beyonders, climb through these really dangerous sequences, almost like levels, and the ultimate goal is to become a ‘Great Old One’! It’s seriously fascinating.
The Beyonder system starts when someone drinks a special potion, unlocking unique abilities and transforming them into a Beyonder. This process connects them to a specific ‘pathway.’ There are 22 established pathways on Earth, and each one has 10 levels, ranging from 9 – the weakest – to 0, which represents the highest level of power.
5. Tao or Life Force Energy
Anime: Hell’s Paradise
Both Bleach and Hell’s Paradise feature unique power systems. Bleach centers around spiritual energy, while Hell’s Paradise uses life force energy called Tao, which exists throughout the world in everything. To use Tao in battle, characters must first achieve balance by unlocking the Middle Way, harmonizing the yin and yang aspects of Tao. However, truly mastering Tao involves completing five difficult immortality training methods: Do’in, Taisoku, Shu’itsu, Shuten, and Bocho Jutsu.
Tao has five different elemental properties that interact with each other in a unique way. When two people with compatible elements connect, their Tao is restored through a process called Sosei. However, if two people with opposing elements meet, a process called Sokoku occurs, draining and weakening their Tao.
Honestly, the world of Hell’s Paradise is so much more complex than just the standard rules of Tensen! It’s amazing – there are these incredible hybrids running around, plus artificial beings, and even some humans who get their power from flowers instead of their own life energy. It really throws a wrench in everything, and it’s just endlessly fascinating to see how it all works!
4. Pyrokinetics and Spontaneous Human Combustion
Anime: Fire Force
Fire Force really shines with its imaginative take on fire powers. Almost every character has a special ability related to flames, each working in a distinct and interesting way. A great example is Karim Flam, who can actually turn heat into ice using a special instrument, a process called ‘thermoacoustic refrigeration’.
I’m totally hooked on Fire Force! The coolest thing about this series is how people suddenly burst into flames – it’s called spontaneous human combustion, and it’s the source of everyone’s powers. Some people turn into these dangerous creatures called Infernals, and they’re categorized into six different types. But others, like the main characters, manage to control the flames and become incredible fire users, and the strength of their abilities seems to depend on their lineage – it’s like a generational thing!
The Fourth Generation is the most unique group, and Shinra Kusakabe belongs to it. Members of this generation have unlocked the powerful Adolla Burst – also called the Flames of Destruction – and already have a connection to both the Evangelist and the Woman in Black.

3. The Tower’s Shinsu
Anime: Tower of God
From what I’ve observed, the power system in Tower of God initially appears straightforward. But it quickly becomes incredibly intricate, reminding me a bit of Bleach and how it handled things like spiritual pressure and power levels. The core of everything is this substance called Shinsu, which is unique to the Tower. It’s essential for survival – think of it like the air we breathe – but it’s also the source of all power and abilities. They measure Shinsu in terms of mass (Soo), units (Baang), and size (Myun), but even with all that, the true nature of Shinsu remains a mystery.
As a huge fan of the Tower, I’m fascinated by Shinsu! It’s basically the key to reaching the top, but it’s not easy to control. From what I understand, you can only really manipulate Shinsu if you’re incredibly special – either an Irregular like Baam, someone who’s made a contract, or someone using a unique item. There are two main kinds – natural Shinsu and Shinsu you consciously control. But the really cool part is that some powerful users can even change the type of Shinsu they use, channeling it through their own bodies! It’s an amazing system.
2. Word Arts or Verbal Incantations
Anime: Ishura
The anime series Ishura features incredibly powerful and dangerous characters, all with abilities that make them formidable fighters. After the Demon King was defeated, these characters are now competing to be recognized as the strongest, believing that only one person should rule the world.
Though it might appear similar to a battle royale, the anime Ishura centers around a unique power system called Word Arts. These are essentially magical abilities activated through spoken incantations, allowing characters to create incredible effects. Word Arts come in many forms – like those controlling heat, creation, life, or force – but also include rarer, specialized types such as almighty power and the ability to take control.
1. Cursed Energy
Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen
Many fans have noticed that the power system in Jujutsu Kaisen shares similarities with Bleach, but the creator, Gege Akutami, developed it further into a more intricate system based on cursed energy. Essentially, cursed energy comes from the negative emotions people feel, such as fear, jealousy, and anger. This energy can also take the form of dangerous, supernatural beings called cursed spirits that threaten humans.
In Jujutsu Kaisen, people who can control cursed energy become either jujutsu sorcerers or curse users. Both groups develop unique and powerful abilities called cursed techniques, which are central to the conflict between them. The series also features Binding Vows and Heavenly Restrictions, adding further complexity to how power works.
