Okay, so I’m really hyped for what Nintendo and Illumination do next with their animated movies! The end of The Super Mario Bros. Movie definitely hinted at a sequel, teasing another big character we all know and love. They do have a movie planned for April 2028, but I’m not sure if it’s going to be a direct continuation of the Mario story. Considering it was three years between the first Mario movie and the new one, 2028 feels a little fast for another Mario adventure. Honestly, I’m guessing we’ll see a different Nintendo character get their own movie instead. It’s exciting to think about who it could be!
While The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is expected to be the biggest video game adaptation in 2026, it’s not the only one coming out. Mortal Kombat 2 was released by Warner Bros. in May and has already made its money back. A Resident Evil movie, directed by Zach Cregger, will be in theaters on September 18th, and Paramount’s Street Fighter follows on October 16th. Plus, several more video game movies are planned for 2027, including Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and The Legend of Zelda.
