Great Xbox 360 Strategy Games that are Fun from the Start

Traditionally, strategy games were mostly played on computers because consoles didn’t have the processing power or the best control schemes for them. However, that began to shift with the PlayStation 2 and Xbox, and continued with the next generation of consoles.

During this period, strategy games began appearing on home consoles like the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox. One example was Aliens Versus Predator: Extinction, a real-time strategy game made specifically for those consoles, but the results were often inconsistent.

The Xbox 360 offered a great selection of strategy games, both exclusive to the console and available on other platforms. These games were immediately enjoyable thanks to innovative gameplay, compelling stories that expanded existing universes, engaging multiplayer modes, and captivating narratives.

8. Plants vs. Zombies

A Fantastic Mobile Port

Around 2010, many popular mobile games like Angry Birds and Doodle Jump were also released on consoles and computers, both digitally and as physical copies. A standout example on the Xbox 360 was Plants vs. Zombies.

The original Plants vs. Zombies’ controls, originally designed for PC and touchscreens, work incredibly well with the Xbox 360 controller. This makes it easy for players to learn and become skilled at defending Crazy Dave’s house from waves of zombies using a diverse range of plants – from basic Peashooters to powerful Jalapeños.

The 360 version of Plants vs. Zombies stood out from other releases right away because it included unique player-versus-player (PvP) and cooperative (PvE) modes, along with several new minigames. Plus, physical copies came bundled with Peggle and Zuma, creating a really packed and enjoyable experience.

7. LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars

LEGO Games’ Most Underrated Feature

I’ve always loved Traveller’s Tales’ LEGO games, but they’re usually pretty straightforward – lots of running, jumping, and shooting in a third-person view. But things got really interesting when they released LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars back in 2011. That game actually started adding some strategic elements, which was a cool change of pace!

As a huge LEGO and Star Wars fan, I was so excited for LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars! It was based on the awesome Clone Wars movie and the first couple seasons of the TV show. The game kept the fun LEGO gameplay we all knew and loved, but they added something totally new: RTS ground battles where you actually got to command armies of Clone Troopers – it was a blast!

In this game, players construct bases and strategically deploy Clone troops, cannons, and vehicles to battle the forces of the CIS in exciting recreations of iconic battles from the series, including the Second Battle of Geonosis and the fight against the colossal Zillo Beast on Malastare.

6. Brütal Legend

Jack Black’s Greatest Gaming Role

Jack Black is well-known now, particularly with younger gamers, for his memorable performances as video game characters in films like A Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, many consider his role as Eddie Riggs in Brütal Legend to be his best gaming-related performance.

Brütal Legend was a dream come true for heavy metal fans, cleverly blending action-adventure gameplay with real-time strategy elements. Players take on the role of Riggs, who finds himself in a heavy metal-themed fantasy world. His mission: to liberate the land from the evil Emperor Doviculus using a powerful axe called The Separator and his magical guitar, Clementine.

Brütal Legend largely feels like a typical action game where you battle enemies from a third-person perspective. However, it also includes unique RTS-style battles where you, as Riggs, need to gain followers to help fight off waves of demons. You can battle these demons directly on the ground or take to the skies with demon wings you unlock.

5. Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars

Commander & Conquer’s Console Debut

The Command & Conquer series is a well-loved real-time strategy (RTS) franchise known for its epic battles. These battles take place in both fictional historical settings and sci-fi worlds, and players can experience them through engaging story campaigns or compete against each other.

In the year 2047, after an alien substance called Tiberium crashes to Earth and starts to dangerously change the planet, Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars puts you in charge of either the Global Defense Initiative or the Brotherhood of Nod. Both sides are fighting to control Tiberium and, ultimately, the world.

Although CC3 was originally created for PC, which remains the best platform for CC games, the game was still very enjoyable on the Xbox 360. The 360 version offered a compelling single-player experience and exciting player-versus-player (PvP) multiplayer, including new modes like King of the Hill and Siege.

4. The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II

The Greatest LOTR RTS of All Time

Given the epic scope of The Lord of the Rings, it’s no surprise that it’s been turned into real-time strategy games where players command armies in Middle-earth. Of the many Lord of the Rings RTS titles available, The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II stands out as the best on the Xbox 360.

The only real-time strategy game based on The Lord of the Rings available on the Xbox 360, The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II, was originally created for computers. However, the 360 version still let players easily command armies of Elves, Dwarves, Men, and Orcs using a standard Xbox 360 controller.

What really hooked me about The Battle of Middle-earth II right away, compared to other Lord of the Rings games, was the way it let you play as both the good and evil sides. Plus, the campaign wasn’t just replaying scenes from the movies or books – it took place in the North, and I got to lead a Dwarven-Elven alliance defending Erebor, which was awesome!

3. Worms Revolution

An Absolutely Hilarious Multiplayer Experience

Most strategy games are quite serious, often portraying epic battles between opposing forces in science fiction or fantasy settings. However, one of the best strategy games on the Xbox 360, Worms Revolution, stands out by prioritizing humor and comedy in its presentation.

Worms Revolution is the 21st game in the popular Worms series. Players command teams of worms in 2D arenas, battling to defeat other teams in both solo play and online/local multiplayer with up to four players. They use a variety of wacky weapons, including baseball bats, a giant concrete donkey, and even holy hand grenades!

Worms Revolution is a top-notch party game on the Xbox 360. It’s incredibly funny to create silly worm names, listen to them deliver comical lines with British accents, and watch the over-the-top, ridiculous ways they get eliminated – whether by opponents or the environment.

2. Overlord

Power of Evil Pikmin

Despite not being traditionally labeled as a strategy game, Overlord by Triumph Studios is one of the best strategy experiences on the Xbox 360. It uniquely blends real-time strategy elements with humor and a distinctive style.

Overlord is a fantasy game set in a medieval world. Players take on the role of a powerful, villainous character—similar to Sauron—who is brought back to life by his loyal goblin followers. Together, they aim to take over the world and build an army of unique minions, each with their own special skills. For example, blue minions can swim, and red minions can throw fireballs.

These helpers work a lot like the Pikmin from Nintendo games. You gain them by defeating enemies, and then direct them to solve puzzles and overcome challenges. Different types of helpers are good at different things, so you’ll need to carefully choose which ones to send where.

If you’re looking for a great strategy game on the Xbox 360, Halo Wars, the first spin-off from the Halo series, is easily one of the most enjoyable and accessible options available.

Taking place around 20 years before the original Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo Wars puts you in command of the UNSC ship Spirit of Fire. You’ll help defend the human colony of Harvest from the alien Covenant, then journey to the Forerunner world of Etran Harborage to stop the Covenant leader Ripa ‘Moramee from finding a powerful fleet of Forerunner ships.

Unlike many other real-time strategy games, Halo Wars was specifically created for the Xbox 360. This focus resulted in excellent controls and a polished experience, making it one of the best RTS games ever made for consoles. Beyond its core gameplay, Halo Wars also offers enjoyable extras like collecting Skulls and Black Boxes hidden within each level.
