Whether they strive for realism, like Red Dead Redemption 2, build creative freedom like Minecraft, or focus on complex storytelling, these games consistently provide some of the most enjoyable moments in gaming, and the following eleven titles represent the very best examples.
12. Red Dead Redemption 2
One Last Job, One Last Ride
Many consider Red Dead Redemption 2 to be Rockstar Games’ masterpiece. Set in 1899 during the end of the Wild West era, the game tells the story of Arthur Morgan, a member of the infamous Van der Linde gang as they struggle to survive while on the run from the law.
After a failed robbery in Blackwater, the gang finds themselves on the run from the law and determined bounty hunters. As the group struggles with internal conflicts and difficult choices, Arthur is forced to decide what’s more important: his own beliefs or his long-standing loyalty to his gang, who feel like family. All of this happens as he also battles his own failing health.
The game offers incredible freedom to pursue side quests and activities whenever you want, and the world feels remarkably detailed. Every character feels like a real person with their own routines, jobs, and families. They even notice and react to Arthur and the changing weather, making the world feel truly alive.
11. Fallout: New Vegas
The House Always Wins
Despite some criticism of Bethesda’s recent Fallout games, Obsidian’s Fallout: New Vegas is widely considered one of the greatest open-world role-playing games ever made. The game takes place in the harsh, post-apocalyptic Mojave Desert and puts you in the role of the Courier, a delivery person who survives being shot and left for dead after a mysterious package – a Platinum Chip – is stolen. What starts as a quest for revenge quickly becomes a complex conflict between different groups battling for control of the Mojave Wasteland, and your choices shape the outcome.
Okay, so in this game, you’re thrown right into the middle of a huge fight for control of the Mojave Wasteland. There are three main powers: the New California Republic, which is trying to grow and take over, Caesar’s Legion, a really strict and brutal group, and this mysterious guy named Mr. House. Basically, everything comes down to the Hoover Dam – whoever controls that controls the future of the whole area. And it’s up to me to decide who ends up winning, which is pretty awesome.
10. Subnautica
Might Be Paradise If It Weren’t For The Deadly Fish
Subnautica is an amazing open-world adventure game where you’re stranded on an alien planet almost entirely covered in water. After your ship crashes, you’ll need to explore a beautiful but dangerous ocean to stay alive. The game expertly blends peaceful underwater scenery with moments of real fear, forcing you to carefully manage your oxygen, gather supplies, build bases, and create submarines as you discover stunning underwater landscapes.
Exploring the alien ocean, players will discover vibrant coral reefs and the dark, dangerous depths, facing terrifying creatures known as Leviathans. They’re driven by a captivating mystery: to find the cure for a deadly virus and escape this beautiful but dangerous world by uncovering secrets left behind by an ancient alien civilization.

No Man’s Sky is a vast sci-fi exploration game where you can journey through an endless, automatically generated universe. You can travel smoothly from outer space to the surfaces of strange planets, discovering and studying unique plants and creatures, or gathering their resources.
The game didn’t quite live up to the hype when it first came out, but it’s become something special thanks to a lot of free updates. Now, players can enjoy building bases, battling in space, or discovering ancient alien sites – the universe is truly open for them to explore and customize.
8. Elden Ring

In Elden Ring, you’ll explore the Lands Between, a massive and broken world filled with dangerous enemies and treacherous landscapes. You play as V, a mercenary trying to survive in a world obsessed with money, fame, and body modification. Night City is one of the most detailed and believable cities ever created in a video game, with everything feeling connected to its rich backstory.
Okay, so things went south on a big job, and now I’m stuck with this biochip called The Relic. It’s basically got the mind of this famous rocker, Johnny Silverhand, living inside my head! The problem is, it’s trying to take over completely. Now I’m stuck diving into the dark side of Night City, uncovering what these massive corporations are hiding, fighting off gangs, and jacking into the Net to try and save my own mind. It’s a seriously immersive game, and every choice I make actually matters – it all leads to different endings, so it’s pretty intense!
6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Before 2017, Nintendo wasn’t famous for open-world games, but that all changed with the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which breathed new life into the genre. Unlike many games, Breath of the Wild quickly puts you in control of Link and lets you freely explore a huge Hyrule. The only real goal is to defeat Calamity Ganon, and you can attempt that right away, after a few hours, or even after many hours of gameplay – it’s entirely up to you. Like other Zelda games, Breath of the Wild doesn’t have a heavy focus on plot, but it’s filled with interesting characters and quests that unfold naturally as you explore the world.
If you like having clear objectives in a game, the freedom of Breath of the Wild might feel a little daunting. However, the game does offer four main quests that provide some direction if you need it. While the basic sword fighting is straightforward, it’s enhanced by the Sheikah Runes you get right away, and the powerful Champion abilities you unlock by completing those main quests. These abilities add a creative puzzle-solving element to every fight.
5. Minecraft
Build Your Dreams, Slay The Dragon
Minecraft quickly became a huge cultural hit when it launched, captivating gamers across different age groups with its freedom and constantly changing worlds. Every new game feels different because the landscapes and resources are created randomly, offering a unique experience each time you play.
Okay, so in Minecraft, you’ve got a couple of ways to play. Survival Mode is all about staying alive – you need to keep your health and hunger up while fighting off monsters like zombies and those super annoying Creepers. You can even explore this crazy underworld called the Nether and eventually take on a huge dragon! But if you just want to build without worrying about all that, Creative Mode is amazing. You get unlimited resources and can fly, so you can really let your imagination run wild. Honestly, the game’s got this classic, pixelated look and is just a massive sandbox where you can build anything you can think of. It’s seriously awesome!
4. Outer Wilds
22 Minutes to Save the Universe… What Could Go Wrong?
In the game Outer Wilds, you play as an alien astronaut stuck in a 22-minute time loop. You’ll explore a small solar system, trying to figure out the secrets of a long-lost civilization before the sun explodes and the loop starts again. What makes this game unique is that you don’t get stronger by finding items or upgrades. Instead, you progress by learning more about the world with each loop, using that knowledge to solve puzzles and uncover the universe’s mysteries.
Outer Wilds is a game best experienced knowing as little as possible beforehand. The joy comes from exploring, discovering secrets, visiting unique planets, and meeting the characters you encounter. If you get stuck, hints are okay, but try to avoid spoilers!

Turf Wars on the Lot and on the Dance Floor
Set in the bustling and extravagant Japan of 1988, Yakuza 0 is a prequel to the popular Yakuza series, revealing the backstories of its most iconic characters. The game tells the stories of two main characters: Kazuma Kiryu, a young yakuza member wrongly accused of murder, and Goro Majima, a banished gangster who runs a cabaret club hoping to regain favor with his boss.
