Sosuke Aizen was the primary antagonist throughout much of the Bleach series, and a major force during the Thousand-Year Blood War. He possesses immense spiritual power – simply being near him can be fatal to most souls. Aizen easily defeated several of the strongest fighters, Captain-level Shinigami, leading many to believe he’s unbeatable. Despite this, a handful of characters within Bleach potentially had the strength to win against him.
Aizen, a powerful enemy in Bleach, can be defeated by a team of the strongest Soul Reapers and Quincies. While many of them possess abilities strong enough to overcome him, one character stands out as being able to defeat Aizen through strategy alone. These characters all have ways to counter Aizen’s immortality and his incredibly powerful, mind-controlling sword, Kyoka Suigetsu.
8. Gremmy Thoumeaux
Gremmy was a powerful Quincy and a member of the Sternritter, placing him among the strongest characters in the Bleach universe. Of all the villains Ichigo didn’t face, Gremmy would have been particularly dangerous due to his incredibly strong ability, called a Schrift. Known as “The Visionary,” this power allowed him to make anything he imagined become real. He could instantly recover from any injury, change the form of objects, or even create and destroy living things with his thoughts.
Gremmy likely could have defeated Aizen by using his imagination. He could have envisioned being immune to Aizen’s hypnotic ability, or even that Aizen’s power was physically destroying him instead of controlling others. Aizen’s immortality wouldn’t have mattered, as Gremmy could simply imagine Aizen was mortal. If Aizen’s spiritual power proved to be a problem, Gremmy could imagine having even more power and a body strong enough to handle it. Ultimately, he could have just imagined Aizen ceasing to exist.
7. Soya Azashiro
Soya is a character featured in the Bleach: Spirits Are Forever With You light novel, making him officially part of the Bleach story. He used to lead Squad 11 as the 8th Kenpachi, and was a very powerful fighter. Currently, he’s considered the strongest Soul Reaper in Muken Prison, aside from Aizen. He was imprisoned for wanting to eliminate all humans and Hollows, a plan that would have broken the cycle of life and death.
Normally, Aizen would win a fight against Soya, but Soya has one of the most powerful abilities in Bleach. When he activates his Bankai, Urozakuro, Soya can merge with and control everything nearby—even the air and other people. Aizen’s usual hypnosis wouldn’t work well unless he used it on an entire city.
6. Mayuri Kurotsuchi
Mayuri Kurotsuchi leads Squad 12 and also heads the Technological Development Department. While he might not be the most powerful fighter in Bleach currently, he’s incredibly capable, and his brilliant mind has already been instrumental in containing Aizen. He’s the one who invented the chair and special bindings that limit Aizen’s massive spiritual power.
If Mayuri has enough time, she could potentially create a device to either completely neutralize Aizen’s spiritual power or reduce it to a level she can handle. Even without that, her evolved Bankai, Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo, gives her a good chance. This Bankai analyzes an opponent and creates a form perfectly designed to counter their abilities, meaning she could create a version immune to Aizen’s spiritual pressure and the illusions of Kyoka Suigetsu. It might even be able to overcome his immortality.
5. Loyd Lloyd
Loyd didn’t live long into the Quincy Blood War, leading many Bleach fans to underestimate him. However, he was incredibly powerful, ranking among the strongest Sternritter. Like his brother, he had the Schrift ability called “The Yourself,” which let him transform into anyone. But Loyd’s version was even stronger – he could perfectly copy not just their appearance, but also all of their powers and skills.
This scenario suggests Loyd could copy Aizen’s form and fight him on equal footing, with Aizen unable to deliver a fatal blow due to Loyd’s immortality. While Loyd could attempt to use Aizen’s own Shikai, Kyoka Suigetsu, it probably wouldn’t work. To truly defeat Aizen, Loyd would need to use his ability, “The Yourself,” to become someone much stronger, like Yhwach or Captain Commander Yamamoto, and leverage their immense power.
4. Gerard Valkyrie
Gerard is a powerful member of Yhwach’s royal guard, but his true role is even more significant: he is the living heart of the Soul King. This explains his unique ability, ‘The Miracle,’ which allows him to defy reality and make anything happen. Gerard describes this power as controlling probabilities, making him incredibly dangerous in a fight. However, currently, he wouldn’t be able to defeat Aizen in a direct battle – his chances of winning are virtually nonexistent.
With “The Miracle” activated, Gerard would instantly gain the power to defeat Aizen. This would be the first time Aizen’s vast spiritual energy actually works against him. Even if Aizen were to bisect Gerard, “The Miracle” would revive him, making him even stronger. Aizen’s most powerful spells wouldn’t matter, as Gerard could simply overpower them when facing unfavorable odds. Because Aizen is nearly impossible to kill due to his immortality, “The Miracle” would effectively nullify that advantage, treating him as if he were vulnerable.
3. Ichibe Hyosube
Ichibe leads Squad Zero, leading many to believe he’s the most powerful Soul Reaper in Bleach. Despite appearing as a cheerful monk, he’d decisively defeat someone like Aizen if they entered the Soul King’s Palace. Ichibe’s unique ability centers around manipulating names, and it’s far more potent than it initially seems. His Zanpakuto takes the form of a massive calligraphy brush, used to erase the names of his opponents.
Ichibe’s sword has a unique ability: if it hits Aizen, it instantly cuts his power and status in half. The sword can also release ink that could strip Aizen of his abilities, including his Shikai, spiritual energy, and even his immortality. Ichibe can even use his Bankai to completely humiliate Aizen by giving him a new, incredibly weak name – like ‘fruit fly’ – which would reduce Aizen to the level of an insect, making him easily defeated by anyone.
2. Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto
I’ve always been amazed by Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto. He wasn’t just the founder of the Thirteen Court Guard Squads, but also their Captain Commander for over a thousand years – and for good reason. Everyone considered him the strongest Soul Reaper in the Seireitei. It’s incredible how much Aizen feared him; he actually created Wonderweiss solely to counter Yamamoto’s Zanpakuto! Speaking of which, Yamamoto’s mastery over fire was legendary. He wielded Ryujin Jakka, which is said to be the oldest and most powerful fire-type Zanpakuto ever created, making him, in my opinion, the strongest fire user in all of shonen anime.
While Yamamoto’s standard fire attacks were powerful enough to burn almost anything, they couldn’t harm Aizen’s immortal body. However, Yamamoto’s Bankai, a much stronger ability capable of destroying the entire Soul Society, could. When activated, Zanka no Tachi concentrates all of Yamamoto’s power into his sword. A single touch would be enough to completely obliterate Aizen. Furthermore, Zanka no Tachi generates intense heat – up to 15 million degrees – creating a protective barrier around Yamamoto that would melt Aizen if he tried to get close.
1. Yhwach
Okay, so Yhwach is seriously a huge deal – he’s the Quincy King, but get this, he’s actually the son of the Soul King, who’s basically the most powerful being in the entire Bleach world! When he first met Aizen, he casually mentioned he could take him down, but didn’t want to waste the time. He really cemented himself as one of the strongest villains in shonen when he absorbed his father’s power, though even before that, his ability, ‘The Almighty,’ made him unbelievably strong.
Yhwach’s Schrift allows him to see all possible futures simultaneously. This means he’d instantly know about any plans Aizen makes, including when Aizen uses Kyoka Suigetsu or attacks. Even if Aizen managed to surprise him, Yhwach can change the future using The Almighty to ensure his victory. Furthermore, The Almighty lets him adjust to Aizen’s Shikai, effectively making him immune to its hypnotic effect. All it would take for Yhwach to win is touching Aizen – he could absorb him, just like he did with the Soul King, and claim all of Aizen’s power for himself.
