Hasbro has cancelled a Dungeons & Dragons action-adventure game that was being developed by Giant Skull, a studio recently founded by Stig Asmussen, a director known for his work on God of War 3 and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Despite the cancellation, Hasbro is still reviewing new game ideas from the studio.
According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Wizards of the Coast cancelled an unannounced Dungeons & Dragons action-adventure game being developed by Giant Skull. This decision was likely due to a company-wide restructuring at Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro’s cancellation of their publishing agreement with Giant Skull, which happened about a year after the game was first revealed. The game’s director, Asmussen, had assembled a team of experienced developers who previously collaborated with him on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order at EA.
According to a Wizards of the Coast representative, they regularly evaluate new ideas throughout the development process. Regarding the cancellation of the Dungeons & Dragons game being developed by Giant Skull – which was still in the very early planning stages – the spokesperson stated that they decided not to move forward with that particular concept. They also expressed continued respect for Stig Asmussen and his team, and affirmed their ongoing working relationship.
As a huge D&D fan, there have always been video games set in that world, but the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3 last year seems to have really made Wizards of the Coast prioritize those kinds of single-player adventures. It’s a shame Giant Skull’s project was cancelled, but I’m actually relieved to hear they’re getting a chance to work on something new. It’s not common for companies to keep a studio around these days when things don’t pan out, so that’s good news!
Larian Studios, the team behind Baldur’s Gate 3, is now focusing on a new dark fantasy RPG called Divinity. They revealed plans for this project last year at The Game Awards, signaling a shift away from their work with Dungeons & Dragons.
