The Dark Pictures Anthology is back with a new installment! After a nearly four-year break, Directive 8020 delivers a sci-fi horror story focused on body horror. This game kicks off the second season of the Dark Pictures Anthology, and it features some interesting updates. Supermassive Games has added stealth elements to the gameplay and a new rewind feature, letting players see how different choices impact the story all in one playthrough. Also, the Curator, a series staple, takes a less direct role in Directive 8020, observing from the shadows rather than actively guiding the player.
While some longtime fans hoping for a more traditional experience might not love the changes in Directive 8020, the game still delivers the chilling cosmic horror and familiar features that Dark Pictures Anthology is known for. As usual, it includes a teaser for the next installment, and this one is arguably the creepiest yet. The teaser is shrouded in mystery, but many fans believe the next game will be The Craven Man, and this in-game preview offers the biggest hint about the story so far.
Directive 8020’s Possible Craven Man Teaser Hints at Analog Horror and Dark Rituals
Supermassive Games trademarked five potential titles before starting work on the second season of The Dark Pictures Anthology. While fans have been guessing which game will come after Directive 8020, many think The Craven Man is next. The series is known for its hidden clues, and Directive 8020 included several that have sparked a lot of discussion and left players wanting more answers.
Directive 8020 requires players to find all of the “O Death” collectibles. Once all are collected, a teaser trailer will unlock in the Bonus Content section of Directive 8020.
The new trailer doesn’t directly mention the game’s title, The Craven Man. However, it does strongly suggest that the upcoming story will be very scary. The trailer itself looks like a VHS tape with four short scenes, and a detached, professional voice narrates what’s happening. Interestingly, this voice isn’t the familiar Curator from the Dark Pictures Anthology series. Despite being just a minute long, these four segments are packed with intriguing visuals and dialogue.
- An anxious deer in the forest – “It begins with noises. Footsteps, knocking.”
- A group of hypnotized people slowly walking in a circle – “Stage two. Objects, moving on their own accord.”
- A levitating woman and an occult symbol – “At stage three, the phenomenon becomes destructive. The presence wishes to be heard.”
- Sliding doors opening to a dark room with a thin pale hand reaching out from the shadows – “Which leads us to stage four. Communication.”
Okay, so I’ve been watching some trailers, and honestly, it’s seriously unsettling. It looks like the story is going to be about a possession, maybe a ritual gone wrong. It feels like we’re going to see things start subtly creepy, then escalate into a full-on haunting and, eventually, someone getting completely possessed. Super cool because The Dark Pictures Anthology hasn’t done a possession story yet, and I’m really curious to see what they do with it. I’m hoping for some genuinely scary moments!
This Teaser Throws a Small Wrench in Past Craven Man Theories
The title ‘The Craven Man’ has made many fans think the game might be similar to the classic horror film ‘The Wicker Man,’ which is about a pagan cult in rural Scotland. While the initial trailer doesn’t feel like folk horror, it does suggest occult themes, particularly with a quick flash of a mysterious symbol. A folk horror game would be really interesting, but this trailer doesn’t quite give off those vibes.
The game feels more like classic horror films such as The Conjuring and The Ring. It has a strong sense of unsettling, old-school horror that really adds to the atmosphere. Combining that with folklore sounds interesting, but we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out. The deer shown briefly in the trailer might be a subtle nod to folk horror themes. However, it’s also possible this preview isn’t even for The Craven Man itself.
The Craven Man’s Teaser Trailer Might Actually Hint Towards Another Dark Pictures Game
Right now, the idea that hidden clues within Directive 8020 will reveal a trailer for The Craven Man is just a guess. Supermassive Games hasn’t said whether fans are on the right track, and we probably won’t know for sure until the next game is officially announced.
Every Title That Supermassive Games Has Copyrighted Ahead of Season 2
- Directive 8020
- The Craven Man
- Intercession
- Winterfold
- O Death
Games like Intercession and O Death are just as enigmatic as The Craven Man, but the first season of the Dark Pictures Anthology subtly foreshadowed Winterfold. Unlike other hints found within the games themselves, Winterfold is alluded to as part of the backstory in House of Ashes. At the end of House of Ashes, government agents cleaning up the mess mention the situation reminds them of “Winterfold all over again,” suggesting the new game will likely involve an outbreak or disaster similar to the alien vampires featured in House of Ashes. It seems Winterfold will also be a prequel to House of Ashes, taking place in 2003. A hidden teaser in Directive 8020 reveals four key dates: 1988, 2019, 2028, and 2029, which may be important to the overall story.
Given that the events of Winterfold likely happened before 2003, 1988 seems like the most probable setting. If the Dark Pictures Anthology continues to follow dates chronologically, Winterfold would be the next game released, rather than The Craven Man. While we don’t know for sure what Supermassive Games is working on next, it appears to be a very scary game.
