Okay, so in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, you get to play as 7 different characters, and each one feels really unique. They all have their own special abilities, cool vehicles, gadgets, and even different costumes. It’s a bit different than other LEGO games though – you don’t have a huge roster of characters to switch between whenever you want. The selection is smaller, but each character is way more detailed and fleshed out, which I actually really like!
Here’s a guide to unlocking all the playable characters in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, so you’ll know when and how to get your favorites.
The Joker and Harley Quinn will become playable characters in September 2026 through the release of the Mayhem Collection DLC.

When Does Batman Unlock?
- How to Get: Complete the Prologue
- Gadget 1: Batarang
- Gadget 2: Batclaw
You begin the game as Batman, initially playing as Bruce Wayne in the opening sections. While you don’t get access to his full Batman gear—the cowl and batsuit—until the start of Chapter 1, it’s worth the wait. You’ll enjoy familiar combat inspired by the Arkham games, plus the ability to drive the Batmobile.
Batman will eventually have a variety of useful gadgets – like his Batarangs, grappling hook (Batclaw), and explosive gel – that he can easily use in fights and to solve puzzles.
Batman is the main character and is always part of your team. He’s fixed as the first player.
When Does Jim Gordon Unlock?
- How to Get: Complete the Prologue
- Gadget 1: Foam Sprayer
- Gadget 2: Rebound Launcher
You’ll gain control of Jim Gordon at the start of Chapter 1, and he’ll join you as a second player throughout the entire chapter. Gordon is especially helpful with puzzles because his Foam Sprayer can be used to block leaks and disable machines. And it’s pretty satisfying to trap enemies in sticky foam!
When Does Catwoman Unlock?
- How to Get: Chapter 2 – Mimes
- Gadget 1: Whip
- Gadget 2: Call Kitty
You’ll unlock Catwoman during the main story mission called “Mines” in Chapter 2. You can’t miss this mission – just head back to Gotham City after finishing Chapter 1 and continue following the main objectives. That’s where you’ll meet her and witness her skills – including stealing Gordon’s batclaw!
Catwoman brings unique skills to the team, like being able to cut through glass and climb walls. Plus, her ‘Call Kitty’ gadget lets her control a small LEGO cat to explore narrow spaces Batman can’t reach.
When Does Robin Unlock?
- How to Get: Enter Chapter 3
- Gadget 1: Birdarang
- Gadget 2: Cable Launcher
You’ll automatically unlock Robin in Chapter 3 when you start the mission to visit Haley’s Circus. During that mission, Dick Grayson won’t have his Robin costume right away, but after a training sequence, Batman and Robin will officially become a team!
Robin shares many similarities with Batman, but he has a couple of unique abilities. He can throw his Birdarang to strike several enemies at once, and his Cable Launcher lets him create zip lines for solving puzzles and engaging in special combat situations.
When Does Batgirl Unlock?
- How to Get: Enter Chapter 4
- Gadget 1: Hackarang
- Gadget 2: Drone
Batgirl officially becomes part of the Bat Family in Chapter 4, and everyone’s glad to have her help. It’s a secret from her dad, Jim Gordon, though – if he found out, she’d definitely be in trouble!
Batgirl fights much like other heroes, but she relies heavily on technology. She uses gadgets to shock and confuse opponents, and her drone helps her scout areas and avoid traps.
When Does Nightwing Unlock?
- How to Get: Chapter 4 – Mr. Freeze
- Gadget 1: Electrorang
- Gadget 2: Electric Cable Launcher
Dick Grayson is all grown up and ready to take on a new identity as Nightwing! You’ll still be able to play as Robin, but Nightwing will become available as a playable character during the last mission of Chapter 4. He’ll have some interesting differences compared to his days as Robin.
Nightwing’s gameplay remains largely unchanged, but he now has an energetic twist thanks to his electrified gadgets! These gadgets are great for solving puzzles – they can power up electronics and even link together with cables.
When Does Talia Unlock?
- How to Get: Enter Chapter 5
- Gadget 1: Blowdarts
- Gadget 2: Ninja Dash
You can briefly play as Talia al Ghul during the League of Shadows training in the game’s Prologue, but she doesn’t become a fully playable character until Chapter 5. Once unlocked, she’ll have a unique set of moves for you to learn.
Talia is a skilled assassin who excels in stealth. She can quickly disappear using her Ninja Dash and disable opponents with her Blowdarts.
