Among the Star Wars series released so far, Andor stands out for prioritizing strong, realistic storytelling instead of simply relying on familiar imagery. Since Disney+ launched in 2019, it’s featured multiple Star Wars shows, starting with The Mandalorian. Since then, viewers have explored various eras, characters, and ideas within the franchise.
Unlike other Star Wars series, Andor immediately stood out. Serving as a backstory to the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the show centers on the character Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna. Andor distinguishes itself through its intense political themes and a compelling story that deeply explores the consequences of fascism. While Revenge of the Sith briefly touched on the fragility of democracy, Andor is unique in its detailed portrayal of how fascism affects ordinary people.
How Andor Avoids the Most Common Trap of Star Wars TV
Since the first Star Wars movie came out in 1977, fans have always connected the franchise with things like lightsabers, Jedi, and the Skywalker family. While those elements still exist in the series Andor, the show deliberately moves away from the magical side of Star Wars and its iconic imagery. Instead, it focuses on how the events affect real people. The original films showed the Empire’s harshness, but rarely explored the consequences of its actions. Andor highlights the sacrifices people make in the fight for freedom, and those characters aren’t defined by lightsabers or special powers. This approach makes the show feel realistic, even though it’s set in a science fiction world.

What makes this series stand out is its realistic approach, giving it a unique identity on Disney+. While building on the familiar world of Star Wars, Andor also feels like a fresh, independent story, avoiding many of the franchise’s usual clichés. The show’s creators skillfully balanced these two aspects, and that’s a major reason it’s been so well-received. Even with legendary characters like Han Solo and Yoda, Andor has introduced truly memorable figures like Maarva and Syril. They may not be action-figure material, but they leave a lasting impression. In fact, Maarva’s speech after her death is arguably one of the most powerful moments in the entire Star Wars saga.
Andor’s Success Shows Star Wars Fans That Risks Are Worth Taking
While Andor isn’t the only worthwhile Star Wars series, it’s important to remember why the franchise has been so popular for nearly 50 years. Shows like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka successfully blend action, fantasy, and familiar Star Wars elements to appeal to a wide audience. Andor, however, is a bit different and might not be as enjoyable for younger viewers. Someone new to Star Wars, perhaps after a visit to Galaxy’s Edge, would likely have more fun with a show like Skeleton Crew. Not every Star Wars show needs to be as serious as Andor, but it would be great to see more series that are willing to take chances and aren’t solely focused on established characters or iconic imagery.

As a critic, I was really relieved to see Andor succeed. It proved that Star Wars doesn’t need Jedi and lightsabers to be compelling – it can tell more mature, grounded stories and still resonate. It opened the door for other projects to explore that kind of storytelling, and I think games like Star Wars: Zero Company could really capture that same vibe. We’ve also seen this approach work in other Star Wars media, like the novel Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear, which smartly focuses on characters we also see in Andor, like Mon Mothma, and delivers a similarly realistic feel.
Compared to other Star Wars shows on Disney+, Andor is unique in that it doesn’t rely heavily on nostalgia. Hopefully, Disney and Lucasfilm will recognize that audiences are eager for more Star Wars stories that are bold and take risks with the franchise.
