Crunchyroll is now the world’s leading anime streaming service outside of Japan. Because of its popularity and impact on the anime world, the company hosts the annual Crunchyroll Awards, a highly anticipated event for fans.
The Crunchyroll Awards 2026 took place today, May 23rd, and the winners have been announced! Following Solo Leveling’s big win last year, including Anime of the Year 2025, the title now goes to My Hero Academia. Produced by Studio Bones, My Hero Academia has been named Crunchyroll’s Anime of the Year 2026.
Crunchyroll’s 2026 Awards Unveil My Hero Academia As Grand Winner After A Stellar Final Season To Wrap Up The Story
I remember when the Crunchyroll Awards first started back in 2017 – the first show was on January 11th. It’s been nine years now, and it’s been amazing to watch them grow in popularity and respect around the world. This year, on April 2nd, 2026, they announced all the nominees for each category, and voting was open right away, closing on April 15th.
Everyone has been eagerly awaiting the awards announcement, particularly the Anime of the Year, which is chosen by both fan votes and the judging panel. This year, the big winner is My Hero Academia Season 8. The final season of Kohei Horikoshi’s incredible story concluded in 2025, with Season 8 airing from October 4th to December 15th.
My Hero Academia (MHA) won the award by beating out several other popular and highly-rated series, including Dandadan Season 2, Gachiakuta, Takopi’s Original Sin, The Apothecary Diaries Season 2, and The Summer Hikaru Died. The win is especially notable because it’s the first and last time MHA will receive this award, as the series recently finished with its eighth season. It’s a fitting end to Deku’s story, thanks to the compelling narrative crafted by Kohei Horikoshi and the excellent animation by Studio Bones.
Sung Jinwoo Passes The Torch to Deku At Crunchyroll Anime Awards
While the 2026 Crunchyroll Awards were fun, the winners weren’t much of a surprise. The previous year, in 2025, the awards were dominated by one series: Solo Leveling. The anime follows Sung Jinwoo’s journey from a weak hunter to the most powerful in the world, all thanks to a mysterious System. It clearly struck a chord with viewers, sweeping the Crunchyroll Awards and being named Anime of the Year. Solo Leveling won most of the major prizes.
This year, My Hero Academia truly shined, establishing itself as a strong successor to Solo Leveling. Season 8 of My Hero Academia delivered a thrilling climax to the long-running hero versus villain conflict. After ten years of buildup, the final showdown between Deku and Shigaraki Tomura, along with the resolution of All For One’s storyline, made the series a clear favorite to win at the 2026 Crunchyroll Awards. Plus, Studio Bones’ adaptation of Season 8 was exceptional, creating a truly memorable experience for fans.

The show’s final season proved incredibly popular, and fans showed strong support at the event, going beyond just winning Best Anime. A standout moment was Katsuki Bakugo, the series’ beloved second lead, being named Crunchyroll’s Best Supporting Character, beating out strong contenders like Jinshi from Apothecary Diaries and Enjin from Gachiakuta.
Beyond that, the song “I” by Bump of Chicken, which accompanied the ending sequence, won Best Ending Sequence. The animation, directed by Hanako Ueda, was also outstanding.
