The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, consisting of six episodes, ended on February 22, 2026, with the final episode, “The Morrow.” Critics and audiences generally enjoyed the show as a more lighthearted and character-focused story compared to the darker series Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. The season covered the first of George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, The Hedge Knight.
“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” isn’t a direct sequel or prequel to either “House of the Dragon” or “Game of Thrones.” It takes place between those two shows, about 78 years after the events of “Dance of the Dragons.” Season two will be based on the story “The Sworn Sword,” and as the series continues, the world of Dunk and Egg will grow, introducing new characters like Lady Rohanne Webber, also known as the Red Widow. She’s a key figure who causes both trouble and attraction for Ser Duncan the Tall, and those new to the books will find it’s a great time to learn about her and her role in the story.
AKOTSK Season 2 Confirms The Red Widow’s Casting
Lucy Boynton, known for her roles in Bohemian Rhapsody and Murder on the Orient Express, will join Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as Lady Rohanne Webber, also known as the Red Widow. Peter Mullan, a Scottish actor and filmmaker who has appeared in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Outlander: Blood of My Blood, will play Ser Eustace Osgrey, the Knight of Standfast. Babou Ceesay will portray Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield, having previously been in Alien: Earth and Into the Badlands. Though her story takes place before the main events of the series, Lady Rohanne Webber will eventually become the wife of Gerold Lannister and the grandmother of Tywin Lannister.
I recently finished reading The Sworn Sword, and it’s a really compelling story! It centers around Ser Duncan the Tall and Ser Bennis, both sworn swords caught right in the middle of a bitter feud between Lady Rohanne and Ser Eustace. Lady Rohanne is a fascinating character – she’s earned the nickname ‘the Red Widow’ because of the unfortunate fates of her four husbands. It’s quite a list: her father’s squire, an older man of 55, Ser Simon Staunton, and Ser Rolland Uffering all met untimely ends, leaving her the sole heir of Lord Wyman Webber of Coldmoat.
Stories circulated that Lady Rohanne had even caused the deaths of her younger brothers to improve her chances of inheriting power. Because so many of her family members – brothers, husbands, and children – died, author George R.R. Martin described her as having a cold, calculating nature – “a spider’s heart.” After her fourth husband died, she became known as the Red Widow, and many believed she was a witch and used poison to eliminate rivals, even within her own family. She eventually married her enemy, Ser Eustace, and after he passed away, she became Lady Lannister, raising four sons with Gerold, including Tytos, who later became the father of Tywin Lannister.
How Does Ser Duncan Meet Lady Rohanne Webber?
The connection between Ser Duncan and Lady Rohanne is complicated by past events. Before she was married, Lady Rohanne had romantic feelings for Addam Osgrey, who served as a page and squire to her father. Addam’s father, Ser Eustace, asked Lord Wyman for permission to marry them, but Lord Wyman refused and made fun of his friend Eustace, damaging their relationship. This led to growing animosity between the Webber and Osgrey families, which later pulls Ser Duncan into the conflict.
During the First Blackfyre Rebellion, Ser Eustace supported Daemon Blackfyre, hoping to win back his family’s lost holdings. However, after Daemon’s defeat at the Battle of the Redgrass Field, and the deaths of Eustace’s three sons – including Addam – his wife, Lady Rohanne, began to despise him. Though King Daeron II Targaryen spared Eustace’s life, he was forced to give even more land to House Webber, specifically the Chequy Water stream in the Reach. This sparked renewed conflict between Houses Osgrey and Webber.
I recently read Martin’s The Sworn Sword, and it was fascinating! It takes place about a year and a half after The Hedge Knight, and things are really tough in the Seven Kingdoms – there’s a terrible drought going on. We see Dunk, now officially sworn to Ser Eustace Osgrey, along with Egg and Ser Bennis, trying to protect Eustace’s lands from Lady Rohanne. The story really kicks off when Dunk finds out Lady Rohanne has blocked the Chequy Water, which leads to a tense standoff. Things escalate when Ser Bennis actually attacks one of Lady Rohanne’s people with his sword! It also got me thinking, Dunk spends some time reflecting on Ser Eustace, and you really get a sense of their relationship throughout the story.
All they left the old man was a tower to die in.
Ser Eustace was an aging, solitary man with no children, and deeply worried because his daughter had been taken hostage in King’s Landing. He hired Ser Duncan the Tall and Ser Bennis for protection, anticipating that Lady Rohanne would seek retribution for the attack on one of her workers. Ser Eustace instructed them to assemble a fighting force from the surrounding villages. They gathered eight peasants, but quickly realized they wouldn’t stand a chance against Lady Rohanne’s trained knights and abandoned the plan.
After Ser Eustace proposes paying for his attack on Lady Rohanne’s servant, Duncan travels to Coldmoat as Ser Eustace’s messenger. While there, he finds himself drawn to Lady Rohanne. He discovers the sword, Chequy Water, was given to House Webber after the First Blackfyre Rebellion. Duncan also learns Lady Rohanne is facing pressure to marry quickly, or risk losing her lands to a relative, Ser Wendell Webber. Adding to her troubles, her late father, Lord Wyman, instructed the castellan of Coldmoat, Ser Lucas Longinch, to discourage unsuitable marriage proposals. Longinch, however, has misinterpreted this and is now trying to marry Lady Rohanne himself.
Will AKOTSK Season 2 Feature A Trial By Combat?
Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms closely followed the story of The Hedge Knight. The upcoming second season is also anticipated to be faithful to the novella The Sworn Sword, as showrunner Ira Parker recently stated in an interview with IGN.
We stayed very close to the source material, much like we did in Season 1. There are small details added here and there, but everything is designed to feel natural within the story and consistent with Dunk’s perspective.
The conflict at Coldmoat will be resolved through a duel, which is expected to be a key scene in the next season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Lady Rohanne refuses Ser Duncan’s offer to pay compensation and insists that Ser Bennis be turned over to her. Meanwhile, after uncovering a series of lies, Ser Duncan thinks about leaving his position with the Osgreys, but ultimately chooses to stay to protect the vulnerable villagers.
In 211 AC, when Lady Rohanne and Ser Duncan’s party face off at the Chequy Water, Duncan asks for a private word with her. They attempt to settle the dispute in the middle of the stream, where Ser Duncan reveals the true identity of his squire, Egg, as Prince Aegon of House Targaryen by showing his ring and slashing his own cheek as payment. While impressed, Lady Rohanne still demands an apology from her long-standing rival, Ser Eustace. When Eustace refuses, the opposing sides ultimately decide to resolve the standoff through a duel. Though Ser Duncan wins the Trial by Combat by killing Ser Lucas Longinch, he drowns in the stream, only to be revived by Coldmoat’s maester, Cerrick, using the Ironborn’s method of restitution known as the “Kiss of Life.”
What The Chequy Water Combat Means For AKOTSK Season 2
The fight concludes with Lady Rohanne and Ser Eustace making peace. He allows her to enter Standfast, where she mourns at Addam Osgrey’s grave. Ser Eustace consoles her, and they connect over their shared family histories, ultimately deciding to marry the following day. Lady Rohanne keeps control of Coldmoat and offers Duncan the role of captain of her guard. Though Duncan had developed feelings for her, he’s disappointed to discover she didn’t come to see him while he was recovering.
Just before leaving Coldmoat, Ser Duncan and Lady Rohanne met for a final, heartfelt goodbye. He turned down her generous offer of help and a horse, but they shared a tender kiss. As a memento of their time together, Ser Duncan cut a piece of her long, distinctive braid. Meanwhile, Egg happily accepted Lady Rohanne’s young horse, deciding to call it Rain.
AKOTSK Season 2 is Coming Soon
In addition to returning cast members Boynton (Lady Rohanne Webber), Mullan (Ser Eustace Osgrey), and Ceesay (Ser Bennis), Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell will reprise their roles as Dunk and Egg in the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Paul Chahidi will also join the cast as Septon Sefton. While George R. R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg stories are full of great characters, Lady Rohanne Webber stands out as a strong, complex, and captivating woman who is sure to become a fan favorite.
Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is now being filmed. The new season will have six episodes and is expected to arrive in early 2027. With so many new elements planned for the show’s second season, now is a great time for fans to revisit the world and stories created by George R.R. Martin.
