All 7 Characters Who Beat Luffy in One Piece, Ranked

Monkey D. Luffy, the star of One Piece, has been in countless battles throughout the series. Like many action-packed anime, Luffy usually wins his fights and gets stronger as he goes. However, even with all his power, he hasn’t won them all—he’s lost a few times, typically when facing very powerful opponents.

Before the two-year time skip, Luffy experienced a number of defeats, which makes sense considering he hadn’t yet unlocked the full potential of his Devil Fruit or become proficient in Haki. He was beaten by strong pirates, powerful Marines, and dangerous agents of the World Government. Often, these losses happened because his opponents simply had more powerful Devil Fruit abilities than he could handle.

7. Higuma

Higuma is considered the very first villain in One Piece. He was a bandit leader operating in the mountains of Dawn Island – Luffy’s hometown – and earned a bounty of 8 million berries for his crimes. When Luffy was just seven years old, he witnessed Higuma bullying Shanks. Unbeknownst to everyone at the time, Shanks already had an incredibly high bounty, putting him among the strongest pirates even without being a Yonko.

A few days later, Luffy angered a bandit named Higuma, who then had his men beat Luffy. Higuma was about to kill Luffy, holding him down with his foot, but Shanks and his crew arrived just in time to stop him. After Shanks’ crew defeated Higuma’s men, Higuma kidnapped Luffy, who had already eaten a Devil Fruit. Luckily, Shanks rescued him. While Higuma was the weakest opponent Luffy had ever faced, and Luffy was still a child at the time, Higuma did manage to defeat him.

6. Smoker

Smoker has risen through the ranks to become a Vice Admiral in the Marines, now commanding the G-5 base. However, fans first met him as the Captain stationed in Loguetown, where he fought Luffy. Smoker is now one of the Marines’ most powerful Haki users, though he didn’t develop this ability until after the timeskip. Interestingly, he didn’t need Haki to fight Luffy in Loguetown. His Devil Fruit, the Plume-Plume Fruit, allowed him to create and become smoke, making him untouchable. At that time, Luffy also couldn’t use Haki, meaning his attacks passed right through Smoker.

Smoker consistently proved to be a strong opponent for Luffy, easily defeating him in their encounters and holding him down. On multiple occasions, Smoker nearly captured Luffy – once, only the intervention of Monkey D. Dragon prevented Luffy from being knocked unconscious and taken into custody. During the battle at Marineford, Smoker again overpowered Luffy, using a club enhanced with Seastone to restrain him and suppress his rubber abilities. Luffy was only able to escape thanks to Boa Hancock’s timely kick, which forced Smoker to release him.

5. Magellan

Magellan was the head guard of Impel Down, a huge, underwater prison run by the World Government. He was responsible for holding the world’s most dangerous criminals and pirates, and was generally very successful at keeping them contained, making him a powerful figure. Luffy encountered Magellan when he broke into Impel Down to save Ace. Magellan is known as one of the strongest poison users in shonen anime thanks to the Venom-Venom Fruit, a Devil Fruit that lets him generate and control different kinds of poisons.

Luffy attempted to fight Magellan using Gear 2, but Magellan responded by filling the area with poisonous gas and covering himself in a highly corrosive poison. The battle left Luffy with damaged hands, deafness, and blurred vision. Ultimately, Magellan finished the fight with a powerful attack – a hydra made of liquid poison – which immediately knocked Luffy unconscious and completely covered his body in poison. Luckily, Bon Clay managed to get Luffy to Emporio Ivankov, who injected him with hormones that saved his life. Without this treatment, Luffy would have succumbed to the poison within a day.

4. Rob Lucci

Rob Lucci is the World Government’s deadliest assassin. He’s a master of the incredibly powerful martial arts taught by Cipher Pol, and he possesses the Cat-Cat Fruit, Model: Leopard – a recently awakened Devil Fruit. This fruit allows him to transform into a leopard or a leopard-human hybrid. He’s also highly skilled in Armament Haki, making his attacks even more devastating.

The fight between Luffy and Lucci at Enies Lobby was a major moment in the arc, but they’d clashed before. When Lucci revealed he was an enemy in Water 7, Luffy tried to intervene, and Lucci responded by stabbing him in the chest with a powerful attack. The blow knocked Luffy back, and Lucci then threw him through a wall and into the city. Immediately after, Lucci sent Zoro flying with a single kick.

3. Kuzan

Kuzan, also known as Aokiji, is now a captain for the Blackbeard Pirates, but he used to be a Marine Admiral. Because of his former high rank, he’s one of the most powerful characters in One Piece. He’s incredibly skilled with Haki and has the Ice-Ice Fruit, a very strong Devil Fruit that lets him completely control ice. While ice is solid, meaning he can be hit, his body can quickly rebuild itself even if it’s destroyed.

Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji tried to fight Kuzan on Long Ring Long Land to save Robin, but he easily overpowered them – Luffy even ended up with a frozen arm. After freeing Robin from being frozen, Luffy attempted another attack, but Kuzan quickly froze him solid, ending the battle. Luckily, Kuzan wasn’t trying to kill Luffy and simply left the island without causing further harm.

2. Crocodile

Man, Crocodile was such a formidable villain in the Arabasta saga! He was the first Warlord of the Sea that Luffy actually went head-to-head with, and honestly, he beat Luffy not once, but twice – and he did it all before Luffy even understood Haki! His Devil Fruit, the Sand-Sand Fruit, was terrifying; he could literally become sand, control it, and just completely mess with anyone. I remember watching their first fight and being shocked – Luffy’s attacks just went right through him! It was so frustrating to watch! And then, when Crocodile was finished playing with Luffy, he just straight-up stabbed him with his hook. Seriously, that fight was a really tough loss for Luffy, and a truly humbling moment in One Piece.

Crocodile didn’t immediately kill Luffy; instead, he trapped him in quicksand and left him for dead. Luckily, Robin arrived and rescued Luffy. Their next battle was much closer, as Luffy discovered he could fight Crocodile’s powers using water. Although Luffy landed some blows, Crocodile ultimately proved stronger, grabbing Luffy and draining the moisture from his body, nearly killing him. Luffy only survived because Crocodile left him to die and a bit of water happened to fall on him.

1. Kaido

I’ve seen a lot of powerful pirates, but Kaido was truly something else. His body was incredibly tough, naturally, and he mastered all three types of Haki – even the most advanced forms. What really set him apart was his Devil Fruit; it let him turn into this enormous blue dragon capable of leveling mountains with just one blast of fire. Honestly, he was one of the few who could even compare to the legendary Gol D. Roger in terms of sheer power.

Luffy lost to Kaido three times, but the first fight was a quick defeat – Kaido knocked him out with a single powerful attack. Instead of finishing Luffy off, Kaido sent him to Udon Prison. Their second fight, on Onigashima, was much closer because Luffy gained a new ability. Still, Kaido won and sent Luffy falling into the ocean, where he was rescued by Law. Kaido defeated Luffy a third time when a CP0 agent interfered, delivering a blow that appeared fatal. Surprisingly, this loss was actually what triggered Luffy’s awakening to a new, powerful form.
