Apple Has Shelved Vision Pro Development

It appears Apple has discontinued its Vision Pro headset, only a couple of years after it first launched. According to MacRumors, Apple has halted all work on the device and disbanded the team responsible for creating it.

The report indicates Apple has stopped pursuing augmented and virtual reality products. They’ve not only halted work on their existing headset and software, but have also cancelled all future research and development in this area.

Shortly after the Apple Vision Pro launched, rumors surfaced about a more affordable version. Apple reportedly planned to significantly lower the price – potentially by 50% – by using less powerful components and a simpler display.

It appears Apple is halting all projects related to the Vision Pro due to disappointing sales. Reports show they only sold approximately 600,000 units after its launch.

Even the more expensive M5 Vision Pro, priced at $3,499, didn’t sell well. It’s possible that limited availability – Apple only released the Vision Pro in a few countries – contributed to the low sales numbers.

Because it was expensive and only available in limited quantities, this product was never expected to become popular with most people. It was clear from the start that if the Apple Vision Pro were to launch in South Africa, it would cost at least R70,000.

Apple’s wearable technology still has potential. The company is now said to be developing new smart glasses, aiming to join the increasingly popular trend. Hopefully, Apple has realized that even excellent technology won’t sell well if the price is too high, especially for specialized products.
