PS Plus May Games Include a Football Hit and a Soulslike in Crisis

With the end of the month approaching, PlayStation announced the free games coming to PlayStation Plus Essential in May this Wednesday.

This month’s PlayStation Plus games should appeal to two groups of players: those who love challenging “Souls-like” games and those who are passionate about football. If you enjoy either genre, or both, you’re in luck!

The Road to the 2026 World Cup and Double Trouble

This month, three new games are coming to the service: EA Sports FC 26 (available on PS4 and PS5), Nine Sols (PS4, PS5), and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers (PS5 only).

EA Sports FC 26 is the biggest release in May, and it’s perfectly timed! It’ll get everyone hyped up for the 2026 World Cup, which starts in June – just around the corner. Plus, with the Champions League nearing its exciting conclusion in May, football fans have a lot to look forward to.

As a huge football fan, I’m always impressed with EA’s game. The best part is definitely Football Ultimate Team, but it’s the sheer amount of real-world content that really gets me – we’re talking over 20,000 players, 750 clubs and national teams, and tons of stadiums and leagues! Seriously, it feels like you’re experiencing the entire season right from your couch.

If you’d rather engage in intense, skillful combat than watch penalty kicks, May has a lot to offer. Leading the charge is Nine Sols, a challenging and beautifully crafted 2D action-platformer. It takes inspiration from games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, focusing on perfectly timed blocks and deflections instead of simply dodging. Nine Sols was a highlight of the indie games released in 2024 and is essential playing for anyone who enjoys challenging action games (often called ‘Souls-likes’).

Completing the lineup is Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, the most detailed game this month. It’s set in China during the chaotic final years of the Ming Dynasty, and you play as Wuchang, a pirate warrior who wakes up with amnesia. To survive, you’ll need to learn different fighting techniques, use old-fashioned guns, and even gain powers by defeating enemies.
