Atari CEO Reveals Plans to Revitalize Retro Brand

As a long-time Atari fan, I was really excited to hear CEO Wade Rosen talk about the future of the company. He basically said they’re going to learn from past mistakes and really lean into what made Atari great – retro games! He emphasized that they won’t just release anything with the Atari name on it; they’re going to be careful about what games and products they make, because their goal is to become a huge, globally-known retro gaming brand again. It sounds like they’re finally focusing on what fans like me want!

Atari, founded in 1972, first became well-known with the release of the Atari 2600, one of the earliest commercially successful home video game consoles in the Western world. However, the Atari 2600 is also remembered for contributing to the video game market crash of 1983. While Atari continued developing consoles throughout the 80s and 90s, none matched the popularity of the 2600. After the unsuccessful launch of the Atari Jaguar, the company moved away from console development and explored other business areas.

Atari’s CEO Is Doubling Down On Retro Games

Atari is making a comeback in the console gaming world with its retro systems, the Atari 7800+ and 2600+. Led by CEO Wade Rosen, who took the helm in 2021, the company is focusing on bringing classic games to modern audiences. Rosen views past setbacks as valuable lessons and is dedicated to building a sustainable future for Atari. After a challenging start, the company is now projecting positive earnings for the first time in years. Rosen emphasizes that the goal isn’t to simply rebuild Atari to sell it, but to revitalize the brand and create a lasting, positive impact on people’s lives, much like Nintendo has done.

Implicit Conversions recently updated the Fear Effect series for current consoles and also collaborated with Digital Eclipse on the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection.
