Dead by Daylight remains incredibly popular, and its future looks bright with more content planned. The game currently boasts over 170 perks for Survivors, and while not all are commonly used, many powerful combinations are surprisingly overlooked.
There are many different ways to play as a Survivor in Dead by Daylight, and lots of unique roles you can specialize in with the right perk combinations. This guide explores various playstyles, whether you want to try something new, refresh your current perks, or just find some fun and effective builds. We’ve got something for everyone!
Totem Hunter Build
Hexes Be Gone
As a Dead by Daylight player, I’ve found that while escaping with the Killer on your tail and fixing generators is the main goal, getting extra points by cleansing totems is a really nice change of pace. Honestly, after putting in so many hours, sometimes you just need a different task! There are even perks that help you find those totem spawns, which is great when you’re drawing a blank. Plus, cleansing totems isn’t just about the points; it can also give you bonuses and, importantly, shut down those annoying hexes the Killer uses!
- Inner Strength (Nancy Wheeler) -After cleansing a Totem, hiding inside a Locker for 10/9/8 seconds to heal one Health State when injured or suffering from a Deep Wound.
- Hardened (Lara Croft) – After unlocking a Chest and either blessing or cleansing a Totem, the urge to scream from any cause is suppressed and instead causes the Aura of the Killer to be revealed for 3/4/5 seconds.
- Counterforce (Jill Valentine) – Cleanse Totems 20% faster and gain another, stackable 20% Cleansing Speed bonus per cleansed Totem. After cleansing a Totem, the Aura of the Totem farthest away is revealed to you for 2/3/4 seconds.
- Detective’s Hunch (David Tapp) -Each time a Generator is completed, the Auras of any Generators, Chests, and Totems within 32/48/64 metres are revealed to you for 10 seconds. If the player holds a Map, any objects revealed by Detective’s Hunch will automatically be tracked by it.
Treasure Hunter
Bag Some Loot to Aid in the Trial
Despite being a terrifying force, the Entity sometimes helps Survivors during trials. It allows them a chance to escape, and even offers opportunities to find useful items in chests. These items, boosted by certain Survivor perks, can significantly improve their chances of survival – like a flashlight to stun the Killer, a toolbox for quick repairs, or a med kit to recover health and rejoin the struggle.
- Ace in the Hole (Ace Visconti): When retrieving an Item from a Chest, there is a chance an Add-on will be attached to it: 100% chance for an Add-on of Very Rare Rarity or lower, 10/25/50% chance for a second Add-on of Uncommon Rarity or lower. Ace in the Hole allows the player to keep any Add-ons their Item has equipped upon escaping.
- Moment of Glory (Trevor Belmont) – After performing the Unlocking or Rummaging action on Chests a total of 2 times, Moment of Glory activates: After becoming injured, instantly suffer from the Broken Status Effect, butautomatically heal 1 Health State after 80/70/60 seconds. This effect is canceled prematurely if the player enters the Dying State.
- Appraisal (Elodie Rakoto) – Appraisal has 3 Tokens at the start of the Trial: Consume 1 Token to Rummage through an already unlocked Chest to retrieve a second Item. Increases Rummaging speed by 40/60/80 %.
- Plunderer’s Instinct (General Perk) – Reveals Auras of closed chests, items inside chests, and dropped items within 32/48/64 metres. Increases the Odds of finding Items of higher Rarities in Chests by +50 %.
Locker Build
Make Use of Hiding Spots in Trials
Lockers offer players a hiding spot from Killers, completely concealing them and even masking their presence. However, Killers can still pull players out of lockers. Despite this risk, using a locker can be a good strategy – not only to avoid being attacked, but also to benefit from perks that enhance lockers with special abilities.
- Dance With Me (Kate Denson) -When performing a Rushed Action to vault a Window or exit a Locker, Dance With Me suppresses the creation of Scratch Marks for 3 seconds.
- Head On (Jane Romero) – After hiding in a Locker for 3 seconds, performing a Rush Exit out of the Locker stuns a nearby Killer for 3 seconds.
- Inner Strength (Nancy Wheeler) – After cleansing a Totem, hiding inside a Locker for 10/9/8 seconds to heal one Health State when injured or suffering from a Deep Wound.
- Quick and Quiet (Meg Thomas) -Suppresses both the Loud Noise Notification and the sound effects triggered by rushing to vault Windows, Pallets, or rushing to enter or exit Lockers.
Altruism Build
Become the Hero
Helping other players isn’t just a way to earn points—it’s a key part of succeeding in the game. The more survivors who stay alive, the better everyone’s chances of escaping. Building a character focused on saving others – using perks that rescue people from hooks – can significantly improve your own survival and boost your score.
- Kindred (General Perk) – The Aura of the Killer is revealed to all Survivors whenever the Killer comes within 8/12/16 meters of the Hook.
- Borrowed Time (William “Bill” Overbeck) – Extends the duration of Endurance Status Effect for the unhooked survivor by 6/8/10 seconds and the duration of their Haste Status Effect by 10 seconds.
- Shoulder the Burden (Taurie Cain) – Trade 1 Hook State with the other Survivor to their benefit.
- We’ll Make It (General Perk) – Increases Altruistic Healing speed by +100 % for 30/60/90 seconds.
Aura-Reading Build
Read Auras To Play Around Killers And Other Survivors
Killers often have the upper hand because Survivors can be caught off guard, particularly on maps with lots of dark, tall objects. It’s also tough to play effectively when you can’t communicate with your teammates, making solo play challenging. However, Survivors can improve their chances by using abilities that reveal the locations of others – both teammates and the Killer.
- Kindred (General Perk) – The Aura of the Killer is revealed to all Survivors whenever the Killer comes within 8/12/16 meters of the Hook.
- Eyes of Belmont (Trevor Belmont) – Whenever a Generator is completed, the Aura of the Killer is revealed to you for 1/2/3 seconds. Extends the duration of all instances of the Killer’s Aura being revealed to you by +2 seconds.
- Open-Handed (Ace Visconti) – Increases the radius of all Aura-reading abilities emanating from yourself or other Survivors by 8/12/16 meters.
- Empathy (Claudette Morel) – The Auras of injured or dying Survivors are revealed to you within 64/96/128 meters.
Stun Build
Get Payback
Survivors in this game usually need to run away from the Killer and try to stay ahead. However, they can also fight back. One key strategy is to stun the Killer – briefly stopping them in their tracks. This can be done by skillfully dropping pallets or using special abilities, giving the Survivor a chance to escape and potentially turn the tables.
- Blast Mine (Jill Valentine) – After repairing Generators for a total of 40 %, Blast Mine activates: Press the Active Ability button while near a partially progressed Generator to install a Trap, which stays active for 100/110/120 seconds. When the Killer damages the Trapped Generator, its Trap explodes halfway through, stunning the Killer for 4 seconds and blinding all Players within 12.5 metres of the Trapped Generator.
- Exultation (Trevor Belmont) – Stunning the Killer with a Pallet upgrades the Rarity of your held Item to the next tier. Recharges the Item by +25 %.
- Any Means Necessary (Yui Kimura) – Press and hold the Active Ability button for 6/5/4 seconds while standing beside a dropped Pallet to reset it to its upright position.
- Head On (Jane Romero) – After hiding in a Locker for 3 seconds, Head On activates. Performing a Rush Exit out of the Locker stuns a nearby Killer for 3 seconds.
The Non-Teachable Build
Best For Newcomers
If you’re new to the game, you might not have many perks available yet, as most are unlocked by playing for a while or buying extra content. This setup is designed for beginners. Perks like Kindred and Déjà Vu help new players understand what’s happening around them, while We’ll Make It and Hope give Survivors a significant speed boost to stay safe and escape when things get tough.
- Déjà Vu (General Perk) – The aura of three generators within close proximity to each other is revealed. Gain a 4/5/6% repair speed bonus when working on these generators.
- Kindred (General Perk) – The Aura of the Killer is revealed to all Survivors whenever the Killer comes within 8/12/16 meters of the Hook.
- Hope (General Perk) – Move 5/6/7% faster once the exit gates are powered.
- We’ll Make It (General Perk) – Increases Altruistic Healing speed by +100 % for 30/60/90 seconds.
The Beginner Build
Beginner-Friendly, But With Access To More Perks
If you’re just starting out in Dead by Daylight, the game’s maps and systems can seem complicated. This perk combination is designed to help new players, especially those with access to purchased Survivors. “Windows of Opportunity” makes it easier to locate pallets and windows, letting you practice evading the Killer. “Kindred” and “Déjà Vu” show you the auras of hooks and generators, which is great for rescuing teammates and spreading out to slow the Killer down. Lastly, “Overcome” is a simple chase perk that’s useful if you’re not quite ready to master more complex Exhaustion abilities.
- Windows of Opportunity (Kate Denson) – The auras of pallets, breakable walls, and vault locations are revealed when within a 24/28/32-meter radius.
- Overcome (Jonah Vasquez) – Upon being injured, retain movement speed bonus for an additional 2 seconds. This perk causes the Exhaustion effect for 60/50/40 seconds.
- Kindred (General Perk) – The Aura of the Killer is revealed to all Survivors whenever the Killer comes within 8/12/16 meters of the Hook.
- Déjà Vu (General Perk) – The auras of three generators within close proximity to each other are revealed. Gain a 4/5/6% repair speed bonus when working on these generators.
The Self-Heal Build
Looking Out For #1
Generally, healing is quicker with a teammate’s help or a Med-Kit than trying to heal yourself in Dead by Daylight. However, some players like the safety of having extra health. If that’s you, this build might be a good fit. The Strength in Shadows perk makes going to the basement less risky and allows for quick healing away from the Killer. Combine that with Botany Knowledge for even faster healing, and Bond and Resurgence to help teammates protect you and make it harder for the Killer to focus solely on you.
- Strength in Shadows (Sable Ward) – While in the basement, gain the ability to heal yourself at 70% normal healing speed. After finishing a basement heal, see the Killer’s aura for 6/8/10 seconds.
- Botany Knowledge (Claudette Morel) – Healing speed is increased by 30/40/50%. Healing item efficiency is reduced by 20%.
- Bond (Dwight Fairfield) – See the auras of other Survivors within a 20/28/36-meter range.
- Resurgence (Jill Valentine) – Gain 50/60/70% healing progress after being unhooked.
The Anti-Slug Build
Avoid Bleeding Out
Sometimes, Killers will leave injured Survivors bleeding instead of immediately hooking them – this is called ‘slugging’ – hoping to turn the game around. This particular combination of perks is designed to counter that tactic. Unbreakable prevents the Killer from downing you again immediately, while We’re Gonna Live Forever lets you quickly lift up teammates who are on the ground. Sprint Burst and Decisive Strike then help you escape the Killer and avoid being focused on repeatedly.
- Unbreakable (William “Bill” Overbeck) – Upon entering the dying state, recover 20/30/35% faster and gain the ability to fully recover once per trial.
- Sprint Burst (Meg Thomas) – Upon running, sprint at 50% increased speed for 3 seconds.
- We’re Gonna Live Forever (David King) – Healing speed is increased by 100% when healing Survivors on the ground. Once the heal is finished, the healed Survivor gains Endurance for 6/8/10 seconds.
- Decisive Strike (Laurie Strode) – After being unhooked or unhooking yourself, Decisive Strike activates for the next 40/50/60 seconds. After being picked up by a Killer while the perk is active, succeed at a difficult Skill Check to break free from their grasp, stunning them for 4 seconds. Powered exit gates and Conspicuous Actions disable this perk’s effects.
The Endgame Build
Outrun The Killer In The Endgame
Even with a feature added in 2023 to discourage it, Killers frequently camp and tunnel during the final moments of a match to guarantee a kill. This strategy aims to overcome aggressive Killer tactics by prioritizing quick survival and completing objectives. By keeping hooked Survivors calm, players can prolong the struggle phase, giving teammates extra time to disable dangerous endgame Totems or make a final rescue. Combined with strong healing and fast gate-opening abilities, this approach maximizes the chance of a successful escape.
- Hope (General Perk) – Move 5/6/7% faster once the exit gates are powered
- Reassurance (Rebecca Chambers) – Within a 6-meter radius of any hooked Survivor, use the second Active Ability button to pause their struggle progression for 20/25/30 seconds.
- Wake Up! (Quentin Smith) – Once all generators are completed, the auras of the Exit Gate switches are revealed to you within a 128-meter range. While opening an Exit Gate, your aura is revealed to all other Survivors within 128 meters, and your gate-opening speed is increased by 15/20/25%.
- Sprint Burst (Meg Thomas) – Upon running, sprint at 50% increased speed for 3 seconds.
The Anti-Tunnel Build
Divert The Killer’s Focus Somewhere Else
Okay, so I’m seriously tired of getting instantly re-hooked after a save. I’ve been experimenting with a perk build that really messes with the Killer’s plans if they try to tunnel me. Basically, I’m trying to stack things so getting hit off the hook puts me into Deep Wound quickly. Then, I can safely get into the dying state within a minute to use Decisive Strike or Bill Overbeck’s Unbreakable and punish them. And if they still keep chasing me after the Deep Wound’s over, a perfectly timed Dead Hard can completely wreck their day! It’s a tricky build and takes some practice to get right, but when it works, it’s super satisfying and really slows them down.
- Dead Hard (David King) – After being unhooked or unhooking yourself, Dead Hard activates. While injured, use the Active Ability button while running to gain the Endurance effect for 0.5 seconds, after which Dead Hard deactivates.
- Off The Record (Zarina Kassir) – Upon being unhooked or unhooking yourself, for the next 60/70/80 seconds, gain the Endurance status effect, have your aura hidden from The Killer, and have all grunts of pain made silent.
- Unbreakable (William “Bill” Overbeck) – Upon entering the dying state, recover 20/30/35% faster and gain the ability to fully recover once per trial.
The Runner Build
Can’t Catch Me
The most exciting part of playing Survivor in Dead by Daylight is being pursued by the Killer. If you enjoy the thrill of the chase, abilities like Sprint Burst and the perk Finesse (inspired by Lara Croft) can help you dodge attacks and trick the Killer. Blood Rush makes chases even more intense and discourages Killers from focusing on a single Survivor, letting you push through tiredness after being rescued. And Window of Opportunity helps you quickly find useful objects around the map.
- Sprint Burst (Meg Thomas) – Upon running, sprint at 50% increased speed for 3 seconds.
- Finesse (Lara Croft) – While healthy, vault 20% faster once every 30 seconds.
- Windows of Opportunity (Kate Denson) – The auras of pallets, breakable walls, and vault locations are revealed when within a 24/28/32-meter radius.
- Blood Rush (Renato Lyra) – After being unhooked, this perk activates for the next 40/40/60 seconds. While Exhausted, press Active Ability Button 1 to recover from Exhaustion instantly. This perk is disabled when the exit gates are powered or after performing a conspicuous action.
The Generator Build
A Gen-Rush and a Push
Recently, generator repair speeds were reduced to help Killers catch up to Survivors. However, some perks can still significantly speed up the game. Quick Gambit and Sprint Burst boost generator progress while you’re being chased and aren’t injured. Similarly, Deja Vu and Prove Thyself provide a slight increase to your team’s generator completion speed.
- Quick Gambit (Vittorio Toscano) – When being chased by the Killer, you see the aura of all other Survivors, and all generators receive a 3/4/5% repair speed bonus. This perk goes on cooldown for 60 seconds after losing a health state.
- Prove Thyself (Dwight Fairfield) – For every Survivor within 4 meters, gain a stackable repair bonus of 6/8/10%.
- Déjà Vu (General Perk) – The aura of three generators within close proximity to each other is revealed. Gain a 4/5/6% repair speed bonus when working on these generators.
- Sprint Burst (Meg Thomas) – Upon running, sprint at 50% increased speed for 3 seconds.
The Wallhacks Build
The Key To Escape
In Dead by Daylight, a key with the Blood Amber add-on is the best way to track the Killer. To get the most out of it, use perks like Poised, Dark Sense, and Wicked – they’ll help you see the Killer almost all the time. Eyes of Belmont will make those tracking abilities last even longer, keeping the Killer visible during chases, and Wicked from Sable Ward can give you an edge when trying to escape the basement.
- Eyes of Belmont (Trevor Belmont) – Whenever a Generator is completed, the Aura of the Killer is revealed to you for 1/2/3 seconds. Extends the duration of all instances of the Killer’s Aura being revealed to you by +2 seconds.
- Dark Sense (General Perk) – Whenever the Killer enters a 24-meter radius around you after a generator is completed, their aura is revealed for 5/7/10 seconds.
- Poised (Jane Romero) – Reveal the Killer’s aura for 6 seconds when starting work on a generator. When a generator is completed, leave no scratch marks for 10/12/14 seconds, and the creation of Scratch Marks is suppressed.
- Wicked (Sable Ward) – Self-unhook attempts in the basement always succeed. Whenever you are unhooked, you see the aura of the Killer for 16/18/20 seconds.
