The Dark Souls series has had its share of highs and lows, but it’s become one of the most recognizable and successful video game franchises ever made, with over 40 million copies sold. However, it’s been more than ten years since the release of Dark Souls 3, and we haven’t heard much about the series since then.

FromSoftware has been consistently successful, releasing critically acclaimed games like the massive RPG Elden Ring. While their next project, The Duskbloods, is confirmed for the Nintendo Switch 2, what they’ll do after that is still unknown, and fans have differing opinions on what they should create next.

A Reddit user recently shared their wish for FromSoftware to create a fourth Dark Souls game instead of a sequel to Elden Ring.

While many people felt the same way, a lot of responses strongly disagreed for different reasons. One commenter wrote, “I’d prefer not to see another game. Dark Souls 3 ended the series on a nearly perfect note, and I’d rather the story stay finished.”

Some players are hoping for a future game with a more focused experience, similar to the level design of earlier titles, but not necessarily another Dark Souls game. One player explained they enjoyed Elden Ring, but preferred the way stories felt more impactful and connected when the game world was smaller and more concentrated. They mentioned being able to lose themselves for hours, rediscovering characters and their stories in that type of environment.

One player mentioned they don’t necessarily need another Dark Souls 4, but they’d really like a new game that feels more like the original Dark Souls than Elden Ring.

Someone else suggested a different approach, arguing that the core Souls formula has been stretched as far as it can go. They believe the combat system has reached its limit, and to maintain the difficulty the games are known for, bosses are now excessively powerful. They pointed to Sekiro as evidence that FromSoftware is capable of innovation, and expressed a desire for new ideas rather than further refinements of a formula that’s been around for nearly two decades.
