Want to know what happened at the end of DMC S2? You’ve come to the right place! This analysis provides a complete overview of the key events in Episode 8, Vexilla Regis Prodeunt Inferni (The Banners of the King of Hell Go Forth).

Devil May Cry Season 2 Ending Overview

With Devil May Cry Season 2 nearing its end, Episode 8 opens with the boundary between the demon world (Makai) and Earth collapsing again, this time due to the immense power of the Force Edge—Sparda’s true form. During a fight with Sparda’s sons, Argosax is sent back to Makai, and Vergil pursues him, driven by a desire to avenge his family’s ruin and his years of imprisonment. Dante, determined not to lose his brother again, follows close behind.

When Dante and Vergil arrive in Makai, Dante is shocked by the toxic atmosphere. Vergil advises him to embrace his demonic heritage to adjust quickly. While Vergil feels perfectly at home, Dante struggles to adapt, as a fierce battle between Argosax and Mundus immediately erupts.

The Battle Between Mundus & Argosax

With the epic battle between the old and new rulers of the underworld raging, Dante and Virgil hurry to prepare the Force Edge, hoping to seal the tear between worlds. At the same time, Earth is under attack by demons pouring through the rift – a development that will be crucial in Season 3.

Argosax briefly returned to a powerful state, but it wasn’t his full strength. This imbalance allowed Mundus, at the height of his powers, to start gaining the upper hand in the fight. Despite this, the battle is incredibly large and intense, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats as Dante and Vergil race to find their father’s sword.

I watched as Mundus, in a decisive move, destroyed Argosax and instantly focused on Dante and Vergil. They were quickly surrounded, blocked by Beowulf and a host of other demons from Makai’s Legion. Then, Mundus turned his attention directly to the brothers, revealing a surprising truth: Sparda hadn’t been a traitor, but an honorable warrior – even though Mundus felt betrayed by him.

He deliberately misrepresents Vergil and Dante’s history, attempting to drive a wedge between the brothers. He makes them believe their mother wasn’t loved by Sparda, and that their father didn’t want them either.

Just when it looks like Vergil will join forces with Mundus and betray Dante, he unexpectedly attacks Beowulf and the demons. Together, Dante and Vergil, as Sparda’s sons, overwhelm Makai’s army and move towards the Force Edge.

Just as Dante reaches for the blade, Vergil suddenly appears, fully embracing his demonic side and revealing his real motives. A fierce battle erupts between the two brothers, with everything at risk, as Mundus watches on, believing he’s already won.

The Duel Between Dante & Vergil

The long-awaited confrontation finally arrived: Dante and Vergil clashed in an epic battle to determine the fate of both Earth and the demon world, with Mundus watching as the sons of Sparda fought each other.

From the start, Vergil has a definite advantage over his brother. He’s quicker, a more skilled swordsman, and his upbringing in Makai has strengthened his demonic powers, giving him an additional boost in battle.

Dante has steadily improved as a duelist since the beginning, but the story often shows his humanity as a hindrance, preventing him from reaching his maximum power.

The fight is intense, and we see memories of how Dante always relied on his natural skill, while Vergil pushed himself through hard work. In a surprising turn, Vergil starts using techniques Dante used to employ, ultimately gaining the upper hand and defeating him with a strike from Yamato.

To everyone’s surprise, Vergil bid farewell to his brother before unleashing a powerful blast that sent him hurtling towards Earth. He then seized Force Edge, shattered its sealed form by removing the Amulet, and flung it at Dante. Meanwhile, Mundus roared in frustration as his plans began to fall apart.

With the portal sealed, the boundary between worlds is restored, leaving Vergil trapped in the demon realm of Makai once more. He confronts Mundus in a fight to control it, as only one can rule. Vergil’s goal is simple: if he returns to Earth, it will be as a victor, commanding the armies of Makai as their new leader.

Lady’s Choice & Hints To The Future Main Antagonist

With Dante crashing to Earth, beaten and out cold, Lady is deeply troubled by what she learned about Arkham being alive and the truth about Dante. Their planned meeting at Fredi, Dante’s favorite restaurant, is now impossible, and Cindy watches with amazement as a letter is left for him with his beloved Strawberry Shake.

Lady bids farewell to Nell Goldstein, the brilliant mind behind Dante’s iconic guns, Ebony and Ivory. She departs with only one item in her suitcase: Kalina Ann, her powerful rocket launcher from Devil May Cry 3. This strongly suggests the next major threat will be personal – Lady’s own father, who is revealed to be the Jester, a fact many fans had already suspected.

Everything from this point on is just guesswork, so don’t take it as confirmed. We’ve already seen a major clue about Season 3: Lady has freed herself from Darkcom and is leaving for good, while Dante remains unconscious and injured. She’s now determined to find and confront the man who used to be her father – and is transforming into the demonic Jester familiar to fans of Devil May Cry 3. This raises the question: will her journey lead her to a location resembling the Temen-Ni-Gru tower?

If that happens, the future of the series seems obvious. A third season of Devil May Cry could closely follow the story of DMC 3, featuring Dante and Vergil as enemies battling for their ideals, and Lady finally facing her troubled past.

As for Trish, whether she’ll be in Season 3 is up to Adi Shankar. It’s the main question fans have right now. The show’s timeline isn’t exactly the same as the original story, but it shares a lot of similarities.

The Broken Pendant

The final shot reveals Dante still alive, but utterly defeated and heartbroken. He’s lost more than just a fight with his brother – he’s lost his last remaining family member, repeating a painful loss from his past.

The Pendant breaks again at this point, representing the complete breakdown of their relationship and the growing distance between them. Dante has been portrayed as vulnerable and directionless, lacking both combat experience and a strong purpose. For much of the series, he’s been treated as helpless, and this has led many viewers to suspect a larger, more sinister plot is unfolding.

It’s clear that the demon hunter can only recover by changing as a person. He’s at his lowest point – heartbroken, estranged from his brother, and left with nothing. From here, things can only get better. Season 3 will give us a chance to see the real Dante, the character fans have always loved from the original games.
