As a lifelong Dragon Ball fan, I’ve always been amazed by its villains! Seriously, over the decades, the series has given us some of the most memorable and influential bad guys not just in anime, but in all of fiction. They’ve really set the standard for what makes a great villain – Dragon Ball’s antagonists have practically defined the trope itself!
While Dragon Ball has featured many memorable villains, ten of them truly stand out for how much they impacted the series’ overall direction. This article will explore those ten best villains and how they each changed the story in a significant way.
10. Jiren Was The Reason Behind Goku’s Strongest Form
Debut Arc: Universe Survival Saga
The power levels in the Dragon Ball series were already incredibly high, but Dragon Ball Super took them to a whole new level. The heroes eventually faced Jiren, a uniquely powerful opponent who wasn’t motivated by malice, but by the need to protect his universe. Jiren’s immense strength pushed Goku to achieve his Perfected Ultra Instinct form and ultimately changed the direction of the series by introducing incredibly powerful Divine Transformations.
9. Goku Black/Zamasu May Be The Most Evil Character
Debut Arc: Goku Black Arc
The future timeline with Trunks faced constant hardship. Even after defeating the Androids, a new threat, Goku Black, emerged and began destroying everything. This forced Goku and Vegeta to intervene again, but their actions inadvertently unleashed Infinite Zamasu – a powerful, universe-corrupting form of the villain. Ultimately, Future Zeno had to erase the entire timeline to stop him, which then influenced the rules and stakes of the Tournament of Power.
8. Broly Set The Board For The Main Characters Going Forward
Debut Arc: Broly Arc
Broly has been a character in the Dragon Ball universe for over 30 years, but he officially became part of the main story in 2018. Like Jiren, Broly wasn’t inherently bad; his immense power and anger simply overwhelmed him, turning him into a dangerously strong monster. Although defeated by Gogeta at the end of his story arc, Broly wasn’t killed. Instead, Goku recruited him to become a hero, significantly strengthening Universe 7 and adding a powerful new protector to their team.

7. Majin Buu Was The Universe’s Greatest Threat
Debut Arc: Buu Saga
Long before the events of the Dragon Ball series, Majin Buu was a catastrophic danger to Universe 7. He later returned thanks to Babidi and became the most devastating villain in the entire story. Buu’s immense power and ability to transform allowed him to defeat many of the strongest heroes, and he’s one of the few villains who actually succeeded in destroying the Earth.
6. The Androids Were Terrifying Villains
Debut Arc: Android Saga
Future Trunks traveled to the present after his future was destroyed by incredibly powerful Androids created by Dr. Gero. In his timeline, Goku had died from a heart condition, leaving everyone helpless against the villains – even Future Gohan. Desperate, Future Trunks went back in time to give Goku a medicine that would save his life, completely altering the course of the Dragon Ball saga.
5. Beerus Changed Everything With His Debut
Debut Arc: God of Destruction Beerus Saga
Beerus, the God of Destruction for Universe 7, is the strongest being in the universe, a fact clearly demonstrated when he easily defeated Goku, even when Goku reached a new, incredibly powerful level. Many expected Beerus to destroy Earth afterward, but surprisingly, he didn’t. Instead, he became a valuable ally to the Z-Fighters. Despite often appearing bored and uninterested, Beerus also takes Vegeta under his wing, helping him develop his own Destroyer abilities – a particularly compelling storyline in Dragon Ball Super.
4. Demon King Piccolo Turned Into A Vital Character
Debut Arc: King Piccolo Saga
The original Dragon Ball series’ biggest villain was Demon King Piccolo, and he pushed Goku to his absolute limit. He wasn’t just the first major enemy in the whole Dragon Ball story, but his incredible power set the stage for the even bigger threats seen in Dragon Ball Z. After he was defeated, his son, Piccolo Jr., was born and eventually became one of the most heroic and vital characters in the series.
3. Perfect Cell Was The Ultimate Test For Gohan
Debut Arc: Android Saga
When people consider villains from the Dragon Ball series, Perfect Cell and Frieza are usually the first ones they think of. Perfect Cell stands out as incredibly charismatic and iconic, and he pushed the heroes to their absolute limit during the Cell Games. Many fans feel he fundamentally changed the series, not just through his role in the story, but especially because of Gohan’s development. Cell’s actions forced Gohan to overcome his limitations and become one of the few characters capable of defeating a major villain on his own, aside from Goku.
2. Frieza Is The Best Villain In The Entire Franchise
Debut Arc: Namek Saga
When it comes to villains in the entire Dragon Ball series, Frieza stands above the rest. He’s the strongest, most iconic, and has had the biggest impact on the story. From the beginning of Dragon Ball Z, Frieza was established as the ultimate enemy, and his actions led to one of the most famous scenes in anime history: Goku becoming a Super Saiyan. He’s continued to appear throughout the series because fans love him and he’s vital to the overall narrative. Now, he’s more powerful than ever, making him a huge threat and a constant challenge for the heroes.
1. Vegeta Underwent The Greatest Redemption Arc Ever
Debut Arc: Saiyan Saga
It’s hard to remember when Vegeta was a bad guy. Early in the series, during the Saiyan Saga, he was a cruel ruler who thought Saiyans were superior and destroyed planets to prove it. But since then, Vegeta has become one of the most compelling characters in Dragon Ball. He turned his back on that life to protect others, and that’s actually made him much stronger. While he’s definitely not a villain anymore – and certainly not as threatening as Frieza – his transformation from enemy to hero is a huge part of what makes the Dragon Ball story so great, and that’s why he’s such a popular character.
Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
