Bardock, Goku’s father, is a compelling character in the Dragon Ball series, particularly when considering different universes. Born as a low-ranking Saiyan with a bit more strength than most, he consistently fights for his home planet, Vegeta, across all timelines. Sometimes he dies trying to fight against Frieza off-world, but in other universes, he somehow manages to survive and continue the battle.
When Bardock first appeared, he wasn’t a particularly strong fighter. However, different versions of him have become some of the most powerful Saiyans in the Dragon Ball universe. At his peak, Bardock can battle on the level of gods and achieve the most powerful Super Saiyan transformations – even a unique version of Ultra Instinct. He possesses as much potential as Goku, and if he had survived, he likely would have become the strongest Saiyan ever.
5. DBZ Bardock Died With a Power Level of 10,000
Dragon Ball Z
Bardock first appeared in a special animated episode called Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku, created by Toei Animation. Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball, enjoyed the special so much that he added Bardock to the Dragon Ball manga. In the original DBZ version, Bardock is a typical, low-ranking Saiyan with no special abilities. However, a final power boost near his death raises his power level to 10,000, making him as strong as King Vegeta was at that time.
I’ve always found the original Bardock from DBZ interesting. He’s powerful enough to take on some of the lower-ranking soldiers under Frieza, but guys like Dodoria and Zarbon would easily defeat him. This version of Bardock isn’t the loving father or husband – he doesn’t have any connection to Goku, Raditz, or his wife, Gine. He’s a pretty cold, self-serving mercenary, and ultimately meets a fairly unremarkable end when Frieza destroys the planet. Honestly, he’s the weakest version of Bardock we see in Dragon Ball, but that’s also what makes him so captivating, in my opinion.
4. Canon Bardock Unlocked His Own Version of Ultra Instinct
Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Minus, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, & Dragon Ball Super Manga
Bardock has been officially part of the Dragon Ball story since the Frieza Saga, but initially, he only appeared briefly with nods to the Bardock TV special – his strength wasn’t really discussed. Akira Toriyama later expanded on Bardock’s story in Dragon Ball Minus, a chapter in Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, and then brought him back in Dragon Ball Super: Broly. While the official version of Bardock still involves him fighting and dying against Frieza (like in Bardock – The Father of Goku), the exact details of his story have been somewhat unclear.
The official version of Bardock, as seen in recent manga stories, has a close and caring relationship with Goku’s mother, Gine, something that wasn’t shown in the original Dragon Ball Z series. During a flashback in the Dragon Ball Super manga arc featuring Granolah the Survivor, Bardock fights Gas and gains a power-up similar to Ultra Instinct. This temporary boost makes him significantly more powerful than the Bardock fans knew from Dragon Ball Z, allowing him to briefly overpower Gas.
3. What If Bardock Became the Super Saiyan of Legend
Episode of Bardock
Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock expands on the story of Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku, imagining an alternate timeline where Bardock surprisingly becomes a powerful Super Saiyan that even Frieza fears. Instead of being destroyed by Frieza’s Supernova, Bardock is sent back in time to an earlier version of Planet Vegeta, known as Planet Plant. There, he encounters Chilled, one of Frieza’s ancestors.
In an alternate timeline, Bardock achieves the Super Saiyan transformation while fighting Chilled, boosting his power to 500,000. He easily defeats Chilled, leaving him to spread the tale of the Super Saiyan to his family. Despite being more powerful than other versions of Bardock, this Super Saiyan Bardock would likely only be able to defeat Frieza in his first form, as later transformations of Frieza would prove too strong.
2. Time Breaker Bardock is an Evil Mind-Controlled Version of Bardock
Dragon Ball Online, Dragon Ball Xenoverse, & Dragon Ball Heroes
Before creating Dragon Ball Super, Akira Toriyama initially planned a sequel to Dragon Ball Z called Dragon Ball Online. In this version of the story, a character named Mira saves Bardock from Frieza’s attack and uses a special mask to control him, turning him into a servant. While Time Breaker Bardock isn’t much stronger than his original self in Dragon Ball Online, he becomes significantly more powerful in the games Xenoverse and Dragon Ball Heroes.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse builds on ideas originally developed for the online game Dragon Ball Online, using concepts created by Akira Toriyama. A character named Time Breaker Bardock in Xenoverse eventually achieves Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, and Super Saiyan 3 transformations, becoming powerful enough to fight on equal footing with Mira – a foe stronger than most characters in Dragon Ball Z. It’s worth noting that there’s also a character called Xeno Bardock, who, like Time Breaker Bardock, manipulates time, but is a separate and unique character from the one featured in both Dragon Ball Online and Xenoverse.
1. Xeno Bardock is One of the Strongest Saiyans in the Franchise
Super Dragon Ball Heroes
Xeno Bardock is an amalgamation of Dragon Ball Z‘s version of Bardock and the canon Bardock from Dragon Ball Super: Broly and the Dragon Ball Super manga. Xeno Bardock lived through Bardock – The Father of Goku, but had a proper relationship with Gine. Like the rest of the Xeno Saiyans, Xeno Bardock is considerably stronger than his counterparts. Xeno Bardock has access to more transformations than any version of Bardock.
Xeno Bardock is incredibly powerful, able to transform into Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, and Super Saiyan 4. He’s strong enough to battle opponents who wield God Ki, and can even keep pace with Super Saiyan Rosé 2 Crimson-Masked Saiyan – a particularly dangerous version of Goku Black who has defeated countless versions of Goku. Notably, his Super Saiyan 3 form is almost as powerful as Goku’s Ultra Instinct Sign, a level of strength no other version of Bardock could achieve.
