A clip from the beginning of the cancelled Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake has surfaced online, giving fans a glimpse of the game Aspyr was developing. Originally released in 2003 for the Xbox, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a beloved classic often ranked among the best video games ever made. It proved incredibly popular, and a sequel followed in 2004.
A remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was originally announced for the PlayStation 5 in 2021, and Aspyr was in charge of developing it. However, a year later, that version of the remake was cancelled, and Saber Interactive took over development. Now, it’s unclear what’s happening with the game, and many Star Wars fans are worried it may never come out.
A New Look at Aspyr’s KOTOR Remake
Over the past few years, details about the upcoming remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic from Aspyr have been appearing online, including concept art and development screenshots. Now, an early version of a cinematic cutscene has also been revealed. MP1st reports the video was found on the portfolio of a former Aspyr artist. While the characters, voices, and environments are still incomplete and temporary, KOTOR fans are excited to get a sneak peek at the game’s progress.

So, from what I’ve seen, the remake was shaping up to start just like the original! You’d be playing as the character being escorted by Trask Ulgo, right as the Ender Spire is getting attacked. The plan was to link up with Carth Onasi, but first you needed to get comms working. What’s really cool is Aspyr was apparently aiming for full voice acting – not just for the other characters, but for my character too! It’s a bummer we’ll never know for sure if that would have made it into the final game, though, since the voice work they showed seemed like it was just temporary.
Saber Interactive recently reassured fans that the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is still being made. Understandably, many fans are doubtful after a difficult development process. It’s been almost five years since the game was first announced, and four years since Saber essentially restarted the project. Saber and its parent company, Embracer Group, might be waiting to showcase the game until it’s further along, to prevent any bad press. But it’s impossible to know their plans for sure.

The future of the KOTOR remake is uncertain, but fans have another reason to be excited: a new game in the same style, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, is in development. Several people who worked on the original KOTOR games, including director Casey Hudson, are involved. While there’s no release date yet, Hudson hopes to have it out before 2030 – a goal that might be challenging. It will be interesting to see whether Fate of the Old Republic or the KOTOR remake comes out first.
