Final Fantasy 14 Dev Shares Nintendo Switch 2 Performance Details

Yoshi-P, the director of Final Fantasy 14, recently discussed how the game will run on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. He also confirmed that the Switch 2 version will work with the Joy-Con’s motion controls, allowing players to use them like a mouse for a different way to play.

Players of massively multiplayer online role-playing games, particularly fans of Final Fantasy 14, have long hoped the game would be available on the upcoming Switch 2 console. After several hints, the developers officially announced at a recent fan event in Anaheim that Final Fantasy 14 will indeed launch on Switch 2 in August.

Yoshi-P Discusses Nintendo Switch 2 Performance and Control Options

At the recent Fan Festival, the head of Final Fantasy 14 shared some details about how the game will run on the Switch 2. The team is working hard to optimize performance before launch, and while busy areas might see some frame rate drops, they’re aiming for a consistent 30 FPS. It’s possible the game could run even smoother in less crowded spaces. Overall, he assured players that performance shouldn’t be a major concern.

He also stated the system will support using the Joy-Cons as a mouse, functioning similarly to a PC mouse with the game. Players aren’t limited to this, though – they can also use a standard controller, or connect a keyboard and mouse for a more traditional PC experience. The choice is entirely up to the player. He anticipates that players tackling challenging content, like high-level raids, might prefer using a docked Switch 2 with a keyboard and mouse, but personally, he’d likely stick with a controller.

The upcoming Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 14 aims to give players flexible control options. Many are thrilled at the prospect of playing on the go, as a native mobile version isn’t currently available in western regions and requires starting a new character even if it were. However, players who already have the game on PC or other consoles will need a separate subscription to play it on the Switch 2, though a Nintendo Switch Online membership won’t be required.
