Harry Krueger, the director of the popular game Returnal, has announced the creation of a new game studio called Cosmic Division. Krueger’s previous studio, Housemarque, is well-known for its fast-paced, challenging action games – often called “bullet hells.” Before Returnal, a 2021 roguelite that received critical acclaim for its gameplay and story, Housemarque created titles like Super Stardust HD, Resogun, and Nex Machina. While Returnal was highly praised, some players found it quite difficult and its save system unforgiving.
Housemarque recently launched Saros, a PlayStation 5 game that’s quite similar to their previous hit, Returnal. Both are third-person shooter games where you explore alien planets and experience a roguelike structure – meaning each attempt at completing the game is different. However, Saros lets you carry over more progress between each run than Returnal does. Like Returnal, Saros received very positive reviews. Notably, Harry Krueger, who left Housemarque in 2023, contributed to the development of Saros and is credited in the game.
Returnal Director Harry Krueger Opens a New Studio Called Cosmic Division
Cosmic Division officially launched on May 19th with a message from its CEO and founder, Harry Krueger, who previously directed Returnal. He thanked Housemarque for their past collaboration, referring to it as a “shared Journey.” Krueger explained that Cosmic Division aims to push boundaries with innovative concepts and a new team. While the studio has initial funding, they are actively seeking partners, investors, and skilled individuals to join them. Cosmic Division is based in Helsinki, Finland, the same city as Housemarque.
Cosmic Division hasn’t officially announced its first game, but they’ve shared a few details. It will be a single-player game for consoles and PC, and a completely new story – something that truly represents what Cosmic Division is all about. They emphasize that the game will focus heavily on fun and engaging gameplay, while still delivering a story that’s emotionally impactful.
Harry Krueger isn’t the only Housemarque developer to strike out on their own after a long tenure with the studio. Kimmo Lahtien, the creator of the upcoming game Sektori (releasing in 2025), spent 13 years at Housemarque—the studio behind Returnal—before launching his indie shooter. Sektori aims for intense, fluid gameplay with a visually stimulating experience reminiscent of Resogun and Super Stardust HD. In contrast, Cosmic Division, another project from a former Housemarque developer, prioritizes a compelling story, similar to the emotionally resonant narratives found in Returnal and Saros.

In June 2021, Sony acquired Returnal developer Housemarque. Since then, Sony has closed several studios they owned, including London Studio and Bluepoint Games, which was purchased in 2021 but didn’t release any games before its closure. While starting a new studio without the backing of a major publisher like Cosmic Division isn’t easy, it likely allows for more creative control and avoids the risk of sudden closure by a parent company. However, without that support, a single unsuccessful game could lead to a studio’s downfall, so both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages.
