Google Unveils Play Store Overhaul With Loads of AI and Short Form Videos

Google is redesigning the Play Store to feel more like TikTok, making it easier to discover new apps. They’re also connecting it with Gemini, their AI, so you can find apps not just on your Android device, but also on the web. Gemini will improve searches and suggest apps you might like.

Google is now having Gemini analyze over 450,000 movies and TV shows to create a central place for users to find what to watch. This will make it easy to find out where to stream or watch content, with direct links to open shows and movies within apps. Google believes this will make Gemini even more useful as it’s integrated into apps and games on Google Play.

Google Play is introducing Play Shorts, a new feature similar to TikTok. These short videos will give you a quick, full-screen preview of what an app looks and feels like, as if it were running directly on your phone.

Initially, this feature will be available only in the US, with plans to expand to other countries later. Developers will need to enable it in their app’s Play Store listing, so it may take a while before users can actually see and use it.

Google is also introducing a new “Ask Play” feature to the Play Store. This lets users chat with an AI assistant directly within the app to get answers about the apps they’re browsing. The AI learns from your past downloads and searches, offering suggestions and helpful follow-up options to help you find exactly what you need. While it might seem like a complex way to search for apps, Google is clearly focused on integrating AI throughout the Play Store experience.
